Just wanted to share my story. I am 44 years old. When I was 6 my best friend was a massive Leeds United fan. I loved them too! One of the greatest club sides ever. I had just watched Brazil do unbelievable things in the 1970 world cup. My Dad (a lifelong SCFC fan) saw I was interested in the beautiful game. I was taken to the Victoria ground to see Stoke vs Leeds. My allegiance hanged in the balance. Stoke won 3-2 (Greenhoff screamer!). That was it, Stoke City ever since. Top 5 in the league, won the cup 2 years later. Watched the cup paraded in Fenton the next day. Never crossed my mind they would be anything other than a top flight club. Then Banksy lost his eye (Cried myself to sleep), the stand blew down, no insurance, sold all my heroes (including Greenhoff to scum!!). Relegated shortly after. Enjoyed our all too short return to top flight but have sadly seem us underperform in the 3rd tier. Meanwhile Leeds United have won trophies (including League title in 1990) have mostly been in top flight and recently came close to european glory. Slowly but surely we have moved forward. New Stadium. Won at Wembley, won at Millennium and now inches away from return to top flight. What a journey! Leeds United in desperate trouble, but maybe good times ahead. My son is 10. His Mum is a Geordie. He is not interested in football but supports Newcastle United!! For a while it looked like they would go down and we would go up! I would've had a chance to convert him. One day I'll take him to a full Brit and see what happens. So glad we beat Leeds all those years ago. Go on now Stoke. Do it for me. Do it for my son. Do it for all of us. Please do it.

I'm 43 and have all the same memories, including being at that Stoke v Leeds game as a kid. I was in my last year at Uni the year we got relegated from the old 1st Division. Only saw 2 games that season and we won both of them (which considering we only won 3 all season isn't a bad record!) Goarrrn Stoke, do it for all of us who have suffered long and hard over the past 20 odd years!

Leedsstokie, not being born until the 80s I never really thought of the events of our downfall in that sequence, does look like somebody annoyed the footballing gods though.
Out of interest why did we sell Greenhoff & co to put a roof back on the Butler St? I'm sure getting rained on watching that team would have been better than staying dry watching 3 Div football?

If I remember correctly, Greenhoff was sold 2 weeks after Stoke profits were announced as £40,000 Jimmy sold for around £80,000 I think (memory not what is was) to ManUre who had just declare a debt of £150,000.

If I remember right, we needed to spend a fortune just to make Butler Street safe, hence the player sales. Not a good time for the club. But brighter times did follow and now they seem to be on their way back again.
Come on Stoke!!!!
