Very tough game Saturday, we desperately need at least a point. Hope Walters is dropped.

For some reason (yet to be defined) Southampton despite lacking any real world football credibility have a support that seems to think they’re better than anyone else.
This massive chip on shoulder isn’t short-term either. Our promotion season had them licking themselves to sleep every night over their own brilliance with Adkins and unfortunately Pottechino (sp) continues the myth.
They have spent a lot of money in a short space – but they’re hardly Barcelona.
If a functional and well drilled outfit (West Ham) stopped the hyped enigma – then a Hughes one can also.

They are very strong in every area on the pitch. Their current league position is no fluke. But with the right formation and the right frame of mind and with the fans creating a fortress brittannia atmosphere we can beat them

Hughes has tried quite a few variations. Would it not be worth trying a very old fashioned 4-4-2 with Crouch and KJ as the 2 and The Astro Nut very much on the wing?

Hughes is going to have to be bloody brave against Saints they are a solid quality team, we need all 3 points but we all know a loss would be a disaster now.
Their right wing seems to create most of the problems with a lot of quality ball into the box. Bloody good call from their board with the manager as well what a dark horse he is never makes a fuss.
2-2 for me

We need to really shore up our defense. We built 6 years of premiership survival on a very solid defense which was hard to beat. We are not good enough to win games by conceding goals but scoring one more than our opponent. That's just not gonna happen. So the defense must once again become the foundation rock on which to build our season. In default the chances of surviving this transitional season to build afresh next year will be seriously jeopardized

With Southamptons strength in midfield, the conditions and the fact their defence isn't suited to the high ball, should we go long and arial?

surely the tactics required should be utilised. We should play the ball that is required at the time whether that is a long ball or a short ball.

My prediction. We'll start off passing it around but Southapton will play high up the pitch and put pressure on the midfielders. The midfielders will lose possession a number of times in the first half and the crowd will start jeering. We'll then result to long ball in the second half when we realise it's not working and we'll hold on for a point.

Surely no one, especially not our management team, could have failed to notice that Southampton pressurise the opposing defence and close down, they way we used to. We ignore this at our peril.Start fannying about at the back....Yes Wilson,Adam,I'm talking to you 2 in particular...and we'll get punished.

it would have to be a long case for the ball to fit. We probably need to mix it up and not be too predictable, what we must not do is sit back and defend hoping for a goal to drop for us.

Begovic Cameron Shawcross Huth Pieters N'Zonzi Muniesa Arnautovic Ireland Assaidi Crouch I agree here, if Muniesa is having a bad day throw on palacios. If Assaidi is off it put in Walters. But Jon hasn't performed well enough to start every game IMO. Wh're crouch and arnie are two must haves for me with Ireland's skill behind them. Nzonzi should be good with palacios or muni next to him. Hopefully Gcam is ready to go we need him running on the right past nzonzi same for pieters on the left. But KJ, Whelan, wilko, and Adam should be nowhere near the starting eleven. Cover or 65min subs at best that lot is our cup cover in all honesty.

We'll then result to long ball in the second half when we realise it's not working and we'll hold on for a point. I agree. As such, I'd set us up with the intention of being more direct in the first 15/20 mins to counter act their high pressing game. In theory, balls over the top should see their midfield drop deeper at which point we can then revert to the passing game that we're steadily improving at. I wouldn't want Wilson or Adam anywhere near the starting XI for this fixture as they're both prime candidates for dawdling on the ball and losing possession. Osvaldo has had a fairly timid welcome to English football. He's due a goal or 2. Just hope it's not tomorrow.

We should get on the front foot from the off I reckon…….dont worry what they might do to us, lets give them something to think about The attitude and application shown at Old Trafford last week was exemplary and if we show the same this weekend it will be cheers instead of jeers from us lot Begovic Cameron Huth Shawcross Pieters Pennant Nzonzi, Adam, Assaidi Arnie and Jones as the two up front Forget all this 1 up top bollocks, with 2 strikers surely to god the defenders have twice as much to worry about……no? NEVER been a fan of this 1 up front rubbish….
