At yesterdays game there was an advertisement saying " Arsenal IS proud to have been in Islington for 100 years" Is this correct, or should it say " Arsenal ARE proud to have........" Or can you use both versions..

"IS" is correct
Arsenal football club is singular so it's "Is"
If it had been "The Arsenal players" then it would be "Are" as that is plural

"IS" is correct Arsenal football club is singular so it's "Is" If it had been "The Arsenal players" then it would be "Are" as that is plural I actually think either can be used. Because Arsenal is not a single entity, it is a Body, if you are talking about Stoke as a city, Stoke is in Staffordshire, but as a club, Stoke are in Staffordshire...Ohhhhh I dunno....I is tired....

In British English the convention is to use plural grammar for teams, groups, bands etc. E.g.: Arsenal are a dirty cheating side. The Police have reformed and are doing a tour. In American (and probably international) English it's more common to use singular grammar for those things, e.g.: The E Street Band has played with Bruce Springsteen for decades. Stoke City is looking good this season. (Although I think if the name ends with a plural 's' as in the Lakers or The Beatles, they use plural grammar.) So in conclusion, yes, both are correct, but it's unsurprising that Arsenal have (has) gone for the international version.

But Arsenal are proud sounds ok also... We is Stoke, We is Stoke we is stoke. The clue is in the 'we' Arsenal as a football club/company is a legal entity, therefore singular. If Arsenal fans were singing it, on a good day you'd find more than one of them, therefore plural. A company using plural not singular has always been an option grammatically even if technically wrong - since by definition a company is a singular entity made up of more than one person it's a syntactical paradox.
