Stoke's first match in the Second Division for 14 years was against Third Division champions Mansfield Town on 20 August 1977. They lost 2–1 at Field Mill where the fans let the club down badly, as after the match there was a riot. Wikki cut and paste.

I remember just before the game started a stokie ran on the pitch, stood on the penalty spot and pulled a mooney at their keeper.

Was on holiday when this game took place and couldn't take anything in apart from the harsh reality of the result, but there would appear to have been plenty of trouble according to this local match report. "A disgrace to themselves; a disgrace to their club; and a disgrace to their city" Oh the good old days of watching football in the '70's; you're going to get your fucking head kicked in! Don't hear that much these days (fortunately!).

I was there in the middle of the Stokies and don't recall any riot. I do remember my mate writing off his car which he had picked up that very morning on the way to the game. It was that long ago I am sure there was a guy with a red flag walking in front f us!

I was also there, from memory I believe that there was a bit of trouble with Stoke fans at the back of the ground damaging the wall.
Having been around during many of the matches talked about in Naughty, it should be in the fiction section

My abiding memory of this match was the look on Peter Shilton's face.He looked thoroughly cheesed off that he was there, he was'nt for much longer,he signed for Forest shortly after and as far as I and thousands of other Stokies it was good riddance.

The match was a very humbling experience for everyone. We played poorly and the ground was horrible. I remember being crammed into the away end,and the embankment being set on fire outside, hardly a riot though.Didn't realise it was 36 years ago though,no wonder I'm struggling to remember it.

It was typical dunked 70s hooliganism rather than anything organised, not a riot.

I'm sure this was Alec Lindseys debut ? As I recall he had a nightmare I remember being promised when we signed left-back Lindsay from Liverpool that we would be treated to "the sweet left foot of Alec Lindsay". From memory not only did he shank everything in to the paddock he was slow as hell and generally not a jot bit interested

I thought it kicked off in a big way? Was only 17 then, but from memory, it seemed like it was going off in a big way. We really had to duck and dive walking through the town, and then in the ground it was much worse? Deffo a section in "Naughty" about big Mark B wading in and getting the Stokies moving at this match

There were rather a lot of people on the pitch from what I remember .....if this constitutes a riot I dont know.
The game and indeed the whole day reflected the raw unorganised nature of the 70's away experience!

I was at the game. It was my first away game and I was 13. I went with my best mate at the time and his mum and stepdad. I recall before the game seeing a large group of Stokies wandering around the town and generally having what appeared to be some light hearted drunken fun. I distinctly remember a big group of Stokies coming through what I think was the town centre, and a big bloke at the front of the mob wearing a kilt for some reason. The reason I remember it is that he was wafting it around and then he came over to us - we were wearing our colours (a silk scarf hanging from my wrist !) and he picked me up and put me on his shoulders. We sat in the main stand, with stokies on the open embankment to the right hand side, and the home fans in their covered end on the left. We were sat in with the home fans. I remember that the stokies invaded the pitch before kick off & ran over to the home end and there was fighting and general mayhem. I also remember that mounted police had to come onto the pitch to separate the fans and to drive the stokies back onto the open end. The game definitely kicked off late, but I'm not sure how long the game was delayed, but it seemed quite a while. I remember that we didn't play well & that this probably added to what happened after the game. As we walked back to my mates car I can remember, what appeared to me as a 13 year old, to be all hell breaking loose. I do remember big shop windows being put through and cars being smashed up all over the place. So I would say that it did kick off, and the locals would have well and truly thought that stokies were a nightmare.

People who say they were there but didn't see any trouble must either be lying or complete idiots. There was fighting in the town before the game, atleast 4 or 5 pitch invasions & fighting in their end. One pitch invasion ended up with stoke fans running the full length of the pitch & clearing Mansfield out of their end.
