This is a great deal for Stoke. And I know you need help up front now if front of goal but Agudelo was not the answer to those issues in the next 6 months. Coming off injury and hasn't played since June. Some here didn't want to pay more than 500K for Juan. In that case, you're damn lucky he didn't end up elsewhere. If he was intent on leaving right now it would have cost more than that. But Juan is also intent on playing out the season in MLS, recovering and finding his form. That wouldn't happen at Stoke. He's not ready to come right off injury and into the first team. That's why Valencia also would have loaned him back to MLS for the rest of the year. Juan needs the next 3-4 months to play as much as possible, which will then increase the chances he can help come Jan. I know many are worried about the lack of forwards, but Juan at 20 isn't an answer to those issues. If he helps, great, if not, it's not unexpected. He'll need some time and is more of a future signing who probably can help a bit at some point in the second half of the season. In reality there's two options here, Stoke coughs up a few million, Agudelo comes over, isn't ready, isn't in form, and fans are pissed off Stoke bought a guy who can't help right away. I see how some of you act off a first appearance or two(Shea). Some of you would flip your shit if Juan didn't step in and help right away. So it's good you didn't pay a fee and put all your expectations on a 20 yr old coming off injury. I've seen how little patience some of you have. Instead, you get Juan for free, don't even have to pay a transfer fee, he'll actually get a good amount of playing time through the end of Oct, then likely come over and train in Dec and be ready to possibly be a sub option at some point in Jan/Feb. And, looking back 1-2 years from now, I'd wager many will be very pleased you got this guy for free. That could be incredibly good business. But seeing how Shea came in off surgery and completely out of form, actually tried to help and played far too early, fans weren't impressed in his first match or two and he was then crucified for it, I'm glad Juan won't have to deal with that shit coming off injury as well. Many of you had zero patience with Shea off injury. You'd also have zero patience with Juan off injury. So him deciding to stay and actually play and get fit which, while Stoke benefits from not having to pay anything for him is an all around good situation. Yup, great analysis.

Even if f he can't sign until January 1st - can he come over and train with Stoke once the MLS season is over? (November?)
Or are there insurance problems with that?

There is this though. Who knows really. If this were to happen, I seriously hope fans temper expectations. I'd personally prefer Agudelo on loan for part of this season. Maybe Hughes has a real plan for him though. He has been scouting him for 3 years after all.
MLS Transfers ?@mlstransfers 32m Still hearing Stoke want Agudelo ASAP. Really hoping to entice Juan to join them in England over the next two days

For some reason Pugs you always seem to bypass the bit whereby Pulis brought millions into the club by getting us promoted and keeping us there ! This ones down to the owners and no-one else - they should back Hughes, they havent yet done so. I know, selective memory syndrome. Agree on the owners - very worrying they are not backing their new man. Perhaps they know something we don't. EDITED - Didn't we lose £31m last season according to Bet365 accounts or something similar.

Good analysis Frumpy. You know your shit for a 'merican! ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/3zptH1h3SvRnVmRGLyMP.gif) Are you a Stoke fan or did you just join in the chat when we started becoming Team USA? The work permit won't be a problem at all. The very fact that he is American means it would be much easier for him to get a work permit than say for example an African player in the same circumstances. Some interesting comments on that link to the article saying he's signed a pre-contract that someone posted: Tony in Quakeland says: August 6, 2013 at 11:08 AM There is no reason for the Revs not to let him go now. He’s an interesting case – talent and skill, but never really lit up MLS like you’d hope. Yet I feel optimistic about him making the jump. Chris says: August 6, 2013 at 11:27 AM This sums about sums him up. Oddly, I felt the same about Stuart Holden. He had the skill (and great off the ball movement) in MLS, but he wasn’t star every game like a Brek Shea or a Landon Donovan. Better question now becomes, who gets on the field for Stoke first; Edu, Agudelo, or Shea. All of which are nursing injuries, I believe. What do you make of Shea frumpy? Sorry for asking you to repeat yourself if you've given your two cents before!

Don’t know about the fit but not surprised by the move. I think his potential is huge. If he develops the work ethic to go with it, he will be a force. 5 years from now (makes him 25) he may well be the first US world class striker.

Boston soccer journo#NERevs expected to keep Juan Agudelo for the remainder of the season, barring some outlandish transfer offer from Stoke City. Circumstances here - modest outlay for Agudelo's services, New York's slice of fee - provide flexibility for #NERevs to reject offers As Dempsey deal reinforced, #NERevs lose any rights in Agudelo if sold. Those rights are retained if he leaves on a free.

So barring some stupid offer he stays in New England. I hope he does tbh. Hopefully he can shake his injury off, play in the MLS until it finishes, have a little break and then come over here for a month to train and go from January. Seems pretty ideal to me.

Very true but if he's a decent player then they'd be daft not to play him if they're pushing for a play off spot unless the manager likes to hold a grudge.... If they have nowt to play for then they have every right to let him rot for a bit. You'd imagine we'll buckle at anything over 500k wouldn't You?

This seems to be a great piece of business. The definition of a raw talent. Young, with both pace and strength. He could very well replace Jerome as the impact-sub, which means we could free up transfer funds by letting him go when Agudelo arrives. I can´t see what we would loose by doing that. We should be able to ship him off for 2-3million.

Is this nearly done then? The Pre-Contract is done, so we have him in January, or we bring him over sooner during this week. That's still to be worked out. Another great bit of business though, either way, for Stoke. Once we get Diouf on board here soon I think people will see the new backroom staff's work for what it is, quality.

As far as I'm aware, he signed it a couple of days ago but we didn't announce it because we were still trying to get him over now.
I assume we have given up, which I think is the right option. Good signing imo, with no real risk.

Shea's problems didn't seem to be anything to do with coming back from injury though, more that he just looked massively out of his depth. I can't believe some people would be happy to risk the season with him starting.

Same bayern, some people have formed an opinion on Shea after 80mins in these circumstances
1) A totally new and harder league 2) Coming back after not playing for a year 3) Being a winger in a Pulis away game
you could see in the goldcup final what a threat he can be with crosses/attacks,sucha force.
Even for Kightlys goal you could see he made it with his run driving the team forward
Give him a fucking chance instead of calling him shit after 80mins
