Thinking about some of the trips on these things ,i used to like the ones with individual cabin things where about ten of you could get in,I think Blackpool in promotion year or year before was one of my first on a summertime special out of Stoke at 8,oclock,.Cardiff was another. Next season saw us have a great league cup run with midweek specials to Northampton,Charlton (late night and Millwall) and Watford (Lively). Into the early 80s and Ipswich ,Sunderland (left behind),Boro(long walk),Man U,Bristol City (No windows).Leicester.
Bulbs all gone by lunchtime and a cold, dark pissed stained trip home.
Anyone remember these trips?

British Rail always put the condemned carrsiges on because they knew they would get wrecked
Soon dropped them and started travelling independently

Used the specials many times. Cheap as chips, somewhere for a slash, (mind you it used to blow back in the window sometimes), and a great day out with your mates. Too many to mention but the stand out ones for me were the Cardiff three train convoy, Derby many times,Crystal Palace with some dick waving a knife around on their open end, and absolute mayhem at the station after the game as Millwall showed up. The train stayed in the station for ages as it all went mental up and down the platform. Crazy days ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/0m0lbCuTEBzaRn6f8QaM.gif)

1963 on Etruria station waiting for the train to Leeds to be told the match was off. Prizes for any younger fans to research why?

They still run them in Germany & Holland. Again using the most oldest cream crackered coaches out, slowest journey & usually with the heating on top wack to subdue the visiting "fans". Always guarantee they will get delayed or be behind the all stations rattler.

I remember being on the Northampton one, the double deckers get bricked on the way back to the station after the match. I missed a Sunderland one and ended up on BR and got there at 3.30

I remember going to Bury on a "Soccer Special", I think it was the 1962-63 promotion season ,it was a night match ,I caught the train at Longport straight from school .When we got to Bury the train was to long for the platform and those of us at the back of the train had to walk alongside the track to get to the platform.

Forgive me if I'm asking a stupid question but why don't they put on extra services any more? Especially going to/from London, the trains are packed/ridiculously expensive and congested at the best of times. At the very least they could have a football service on days like Boxing Day when otherwise it's nigh-on impossible to get to a match on public transport. They'd make money off it!

You need to try getting a bus into Hanley between 6-8pm from Werrington !!!!! Rammed with the fuckers from Alton Towers and 9/10 they sail past without stopping Pah

I've been on many 'specials' over the years but the one that stands out is Cardiff..early 80's I think
For weeks before the game all talk was about us taking thousands..playing pool in The Gordon (as it was) nearly everyone said they were going
On the day about 200 turned up..and we made the treck down to South Wales..as we approached Ninian Park..half the windows went through as Cardiff lobbed a load of bricks from the side of the tracks
We stopped on an embankment and were escorted to the game
Afterwards..we were eventually escorted half way down a road..then left..and all hell broke loose as about 500 Cardiff fans attacked us..most of us eventually managed to climb up some railings and get back onto the embankment with the battle raging..No Police around
Some got on the first available train..others waited
A Day I'll never forget..we won 2-0 I think

British Rail always put the condemned carrsiges on because they knew they would get wrecked Soon dropped them and started travelling independently Cane back from man poo on one. Seats were getting thrown out of the door window 'not before getting fcuking wedged though'. The carriage was down to one seat which was mine. I felt obliged and duly did in letting them have it to shove through. Amazed no passing trains crashed that night with having seats wedged out the fcuking window before eventually getting through.
