In 2009 while working for Stoke City, having been commissioned to do a study by Peter Coates and Tony Scholes on South American football opportunities, one of the players I strongly recommended was Javier Pastore, then at Huracan in Argentina and valued at 8 million usd, but they were also skeptical that he would adapt and Tony Pulis, the manager, wasn’t at all interested. He now plays for PSG and is valued at over 50 million euros plus and Real Madrid have been interested in him for a few years now.Fuck me. www.spain-football.culturespain.com/2012/09/whenever-will-the-mentality-of-english-managers-ever-change-and-their-scouts-too/

We would be lucky to get rid of Palacios at a car boot sale with £5 Million quid stapled to his ample arse.

"...having been commissioned to do a study by Peter Coates and Tony Scholes on South American football opportunities..." How many questions does that chuck up? I've said it before and I'll say it again, all the actions Coates makes regarding, the training ground, academy, Cartwright etc suggests he wants one thing and keeping TP suggests he wants another. He can't have both, the two won't mix. We would be lucky to get rid of Palacios at a car boot sale with £5 Million quid stapled to his ample arse. It's ok, he's being advertised on the Internet, he'll rocket off the shelves!

Surely a study of Scandinavian or Eastern European countries/leagues would suit TP?

Pastore signed for Palermo in the same transfer window as we signed Diego Arismendi.

Wasn't this the same time Stoke signed Arismendi? Another £6M gamble at the time would have been a major signing for us and something we probably would have thought justified not sanctioning.
Our youth development has always been shit no wonder TP can't use it even some of our own supporters would choose alternatives, something I have read the OP would do.

As for the last bit I aren't really sure what You're on about but I'd use all avenues open to get players, I think it's sad that we don't produce many of our own and I think it's sad how our current U-18 side hasn't got a Stokie in it!

No doubt we were only offered the $8M option like the BA deal! Anyway it is sad we have no youth the sad fact we have had to take left overs from other clubs in the past is shocking. My lad plays in a team with 3 Crewe players, they got mopped up at 6 years old, a Stoke scout turned up the other week a year later!

Hopefully it's getting sorted but it will take time, it's been neglected for far too long and I include by TP in that. But hopefully the seeds have been sown to sort it out. And I agree, through the youth side I help out with I've seen 3/4 go to Crewe and a Man City scout but not a Stoke one.

Is there any other evidence for this?
It sounds reasonable and perfectly likely, but I'd want more evidence than an agent shouting about how he found an unknown star on his own website. Hardly the most reliable and impartial of sources.

So we agree Another side point why does Palacios on your first link have no selling points so to speak? All other players have comments like "Goal-scorer with good movement" or "Osvaldo is an attacking midfielder who can play all across the front, technically gifted with a strong physique, he is what would be considered ideal for the modern game." Palacios has nothing

In part yes! But I still think TP is pretty hopeless when it comes to youth development. There have been a few with a bit more time could have done a job for us at the time. We know who they are and You'll disagree and I'll disagree back. Because he has none? Semi joke. Maybe it's the reason no one has taken him of our hands yet-poor advertising. I'll have a go; Fat cunt who's mind was lost after the tragic kidnap and murder of his Brother. This was further compounded by a knee injury that he's never fully recovered from and then he's done nowt for the past two seasons bar eat. 88,000 miles on the clock and poor in the wind. £5,000,000 please.

If he's a fraud he's a damn good one! Pulis is the archetype for the premier league mentality he's moaning about there. *edit: he does . At 17:22 25th May 2009, clivejagger wrote: "Hi Tim, excellent blog. Just a note about Juan Angel ALBIN, he's not been called up for the Uruguay squad for the Brazil and Venezuela game because he is injured, nothing to do with his form, he's done excellent for Getafe this season, played 32 games (rarely 90 minutes, may I add) and scored 7 goals, a couple of vital importance if Getafe are to stay up. Without doubt the other player to follow at Getafe is Esteban Granero. He is class! You also mentioned Huracan in your article about Caracas CF (great article, as usual!!), I went to see them almost by accident in their fourth or fifth game of clausura at home against Lanus and they lterally thrashed them 3-0. I was extremely impressed by Mario Bolatti and Javier Pastore, who is only 19! Since then I've become a bit of a fan of "El Globito" and have watched them since on numerous occasions at the Parque de los Patricios. They are now second after beating R. Central 1-2 on Sunday. Keep up the great work, if you need anything from Spain or South America, please let me know as I am in one place or the other, normally (watching football)!! The timing of the Arismendi signing ties in nicely with the time period mentioned and below is an article from The Beswicks website. www.beswickssports.com/sport-news/view/article319.htmWe definitely have links with this bloke as the photo shows. Whether You choose to believe it or not is up to You, it's why I put allegedly.

Martinez/Wigan would no doubt have bought him, then sold him on to Manure a year or two later for a tidy £15m profit... Oh for a manager with an ounce of vision

Not just Pulis but the other 19 managers in this league who seemingly didn't go for him either. English football is really crap at times. 99% perspiration, 1% inspiration.

Meanwhile, during the same time as PC had commissioned someone to study that particular market, Tony Pulis commissioned Dave Kemp to study the very same marketplace.
He hand delivered us Diego Arismendi in a quite wonderful piece of business for the football club and in a deal that didn't waste a single penny of the family's money.
Great find Bayern!
