Ones butler kept getting one and him self lost so one invested in one of those tomtom sat nav contraptions around 7 months ago. Anyway the blooming thing start to go wrong so one took it back to Comet. Imagine my surprise when the young lady explained that it was not indeed broke but needed updates downloading on to it. Why do they not tell you these things when you purchase it?

Take it back to comet if it isn't working. I have a TomTom and have never had to download anything to it to make it work. They tried to fob me off with same story so I contacted TomTom help desk and they told me to send it back to them and they fixed it free of charge under warranty. The only time you will have to download anything is to update maps, speed cameras etc.
Incidently is the problem to do with losing the satellite signal for long periods of time? If so it may be that you have a windscreen that has heat reflection. This tends to also reflect some of the satellite signal causing this problem. Cars with these screens include Citroens and some Peugots. To overcome this problem you will need a booster arial which will sit in your rear window as this is not usually heat reflective.
