Clearly Stoke City suufer from what seems like a large propensity of glory hunters in the Potteries and surrounding areas and I guess that is due to factors such as being wank for years and not that far away from Manchester and Liverpool.
Now I grew up in Stoke on Trent but moved away when I was 18. I remember at school there being plenty of glory hunters, even in the 80's when we were in the First Division but I suppose alot of them could be forgiven as they were kids and had yet to find out what it was like to go to football and actually support a team.
I am, therefore, fascinated to know who on here who lives in and around Stoke and has 'mates' who are fully grown, adult glory hunters and understand from them their justification for such a pathetic, unhealthy and disloyal activity.
They are from Stoke so what are their reasons ? What goes through their mind to, instead of support the team from tehir own area, they go and jump on someone elses' bandwagon ?
Also, how can anyone be friends with such odious. loathsome people ? Knowing that they have betrayed Stoke and yet probably give you stick for supporting Stoke as thet arent as 'good' as 'their' team ??
Is there ANY way they can be saved and turned around to see the light or are they beyond help ? Would Stoke City in the Premiership be any different ?
A lot of questions I know but I need answers to help me understand.
Thank you very much

The amount of times this question pops up is amazing, I have posted loads of shit on the Port vale condolence thread but that is to be expected, its a piss take and would be dissapointed if we didnt get a reaction from some of them, but take nothing away from Vale fans, they, like us support our local club. And like you say the twats that come from round these parts but say they support the shit or thieverpool are odious tiny minded plebs who probably have very small willies and are compensating for their lack of prowess in the bedroom department. All my mates are either Stoke or Vale, glory-hunters are just somebody you know and probably dislike.

i put it down alot of the time to street cred really.its just SOOOO important to be thought of
as a supporter of a successful club, mostly by people who dont even go to matches.
its trendy really to support abig prem club(well, so the glory hunters think anyway)
and laugh at ur mates who actually go to their local club. dont bother in trying to get these
people to go an watch ur local club becus they never will, and theyre not footy fans any way,
theyre glory hunters.

A second generation glory hunter is a term used towards people who are, or who are suspect to, supporting a successful football club although having no obvious affiliation with the team and giving their reason for supporting such team as it also being their fathers chosen team. Second generation glory hunters usually live outside the town where a particular team is from, and may, in fact, live in a different country altogether.
The given reason that a second generation glory hunter supports a team because their father does is commonly regarded as an acceptable answer and waives the stigma of glory supporting. However this should not absolve them fully and probing should be made into why their father supports the club. For Example:
Q) Which football team do you support? A) Liverpool Q) Why do you support Liverpool if you are from Newcastle? A) Because my father does (usually this would be an acceptable answer - however it is important to keep probing) Q) Why does your father support Liverpool if he is from Newcastle? A) Because they were the best team when he was young in the 1970s
If it unfolds that their father supported the team as they were successful when they were growing up they may be classed as a glory hunter. If their son then supports the same team and gives the reason that they do because their father does, they can be classed as a second generation glory hunter, as they are following in the glory hunting footsteps of their father.
Within England the most common 2nd generation glory hunters support Liverpool F.C (due to their dominance in the 1970s) and Manchester United F.C (due to their dominance in the 1950s and 1960s).
A famous second generation glory supporter is current Manchester City F.C manager Sven Goran Ericksson (442 Magazine, November 07) who supported Liverpool F.C as a child and gave the reason for this as he followed in the footsteps of his father, who supported Liverpool because they were successful when he was younger, despite his father not being from Liverpool.

.....also like to add, they are also usually children of parents who dont attend footy themselves
unlike my own son who came to his first stoke match when he was 18mths old,ran around the
old boothen for an hour, then fell asleep on the floor!
i have nothing but TOTAL respect for any stoke fan who never saw us play in the top league

Think you are right 'do it' about the children of parents who dont go to football. Many of many of my sons friends who are glory hunters are kids who's parents have no real interest in football or certainly never go.
GOD I HATE THEM !!

Doesn't it have a lot to do with them not actually liking football that much?
They can always have the excuse that they cannot attend matches because it's too far/expensive.
A stokie, living in Stoke is generally expected and will attend matches. For gloryhunters, they can watch from a nice warm pub or armchair.

I left Stoke when I was 18 too and didn't come back until I was 35.
One of my best mates is older than me, lived here all his life and is a Manure fan. I just leave him to it. I got him to the Scunthorpe game and have persuaded him to come to the Leicester game.
The best bit is that I'm thrashing him in our Fantasy Football league and I don't really follow the Premiership that closely.
