Real deal I think. £1.75m should do it. If anyone's (Chelsea) crazy enough to offer £15m for Begovic we should ask for £25m, meet them in the middle and sell.

You'd get that sort of argument when we had Banks in goal (although, in those days, goalkeepers were still ridiculously cheap.) The real argument, though, is that if you have a great goalkeeper, how many goals per season would he save that an average 'keeper wouldn't quite get to? In Banks' case, I'd say it would be 10-20, although it's hard to say as his presence alone was worth so much in terms of the other players' confidence levels. In Bego's case, I think it's fair to say that on the open market he'd fetch 10-12 million more than a 'keeper who was good but not great. I also think it's fair to say that the goals he'd save over a season - the ones that your 'fair to middling' 'keeper wouldn't get to - could be worth millions. The argument about whether Bego is worth 15 million has two aspects to it: a) is it worth keeping him when when we could get a reasonable replacement for, say, 4 million? b) should we consider selling him even for an inflated transfer fee when we don't actually need the money? My answers to these questions would be an emphatic: a) YES b) NO and you can feck right off, Sir Alex. M  |
