My mum has been suffering with depression of late and so far the doctors and a neurologist have no idea what is wrong with her.
She gave up work last July as a teacher as she was suffering from stress. She was staying up till 2 - 3 am an getting up at 6 to do more work and then going to work. Since she stopped work she now feels like she cant even contemplate the thought of a part time job or even voluntary work. Her speech has deteriorated, she suffers with fits of coughing and breathlessness and has absolutely no confidence.
SHe is having an MRI scan in 6 weeks to see if there are any physical signs of a problem on her brain.
Im asking on here coz im desperate to at least suggest what might be wrong (maybe someone on here knows someone who has had similar symptons or something)
Thanks for any input.
Matt

Could be a Depressive/Anxiety state ?
The physical symptoms may just be the manifestation of a depressive illness .... Particalaly given recent Life changes and stress ?
Sound like possible physical causes are being investegated and MRI scan should go a long way to confiming or not a Physical cause !

Matt,
The lack of reaction to your question is not, I'm sure, a lack of compassion to you or your Mum, but most on here, including me, would not know how to advise you best. It sounds like your Mum is getting the help she needs from the right people. From personal experience, depression, if that is what it is, is very hard to deal with especially if you're the one affected or for immediate family and friends. Be there for her mate.

Matt, What have the LEA done about things to help with your mum as it looks like they could have contributed? Was your mum in a union, if so get onto them they will be able to offer lines into contacts, if not the local Citizens advice? Stress will take many forms and affect people in lots of different ways, hope she pulls through soon.

If you live in the area, it might be worth contacting North Staffs MIND. www.nsmind.org.uk/ for some advice. All the best for you and your Mum.

I'm just another person saying all the very best to her, and you - but (I'm a nurse so know at least some of what I'm talking about) my advice would be push to get to doctors sooner rather than later and if you're not happy that they're dealing with this properly get a referral to another consultant and take the plunge and do it privately if necessary, because tbh the speech problems do sound like a sign of something more than depression to me and if there is a more serious condition it would be good for everyone to know the score and take action asap. Has anyone tested her thyroid function? Just wondering if that might account for going stressed and hyper, it can do that and is sometimes a trouble spot for middle-aged women. But mainly like I say, all the very best

Very sound advice. A specialist won't cost as much as it sounds for an origional consultation and then she can be referred back to the NHS a lot quicker that what they may see her if that specialist hadn't identified the problem in the first place.
I started having seering pains in my left eye and my vision went south. I went to see a specialist who cost me £100 and then he referred me back to the hospital within 2 days as it turned out to be quite serious. If I had let this go on the NHS way I would have had to wait three months to be seen up Harts Hill after being referred by a doctor.
Good luck with it and hope she picks up a bit.

Erasure, can fully understand what your mum is going through mate. Am also a teacher (PE) and probably don't have the marking she does, but with GCSE's coming up and loads to organise it's not uncommon for me to do 18 hour days. My missus is primary, and she is also working until silly o'clock every single night. Social life consists of Stoke on a Saturday afternoon and possibly sharing a glass of wine during The Apprentice. "See you tomorrow" is often muttered at 7pm when I get home as we both have hours of work ahead of us. Fed up to be honest, but I suppose noone held a gun to my head to be one! Love the job, but at the moment it runs my life and I'm missing my own kids growing up. The holidays are scant consolation as during Easter I was in school for 5 days out of 10, plus worked at home in between. Will say a prayer for her tonight. I'm sure she'll be fine - just keep reminding her that it's her life and family that are important, and you only get one of each. Just be there for her mate, that's all you can do. Right, back to the grind, got moderation next week (ie. worry yourself sick for hour after hour) to sort out.
