What are the best sci-fi movies ever made ? Personally I like most of them ,but I have a love of the old corny ones from the fifties This island Earth Forbidden Planet The Day the Earth Stood Still ( the original starring Michael Rennie ) etc.

The destination was 'Mars' wasn't it? It was. It is also referenced in a later Peter Hyams sci-fi film, "The Sound of Thunder". It's set in the future when dinosaur-hunting trips are being sold by a time-travel company - at the end of every successful trip, the CEO of the company gives a little congratulatory speech to the travellers, saying... Today you stood shoulder to shoulder with Columbus discovering America, Armstrong stepping on the moon, Brubaker landing on Mars. You are true pioneers on the very last frontier: Time."Brubaker" was the name of the unsuspecting leader of the faked mission to Mars in Capricorn One. How's that for a bit of cine-geekery for ya.

Correct - he has about three words in the whole film. ;D Elliot Gould good as the archetypal scruffy, alcoholic maverick journo who sniffs out the story too.

Capricorn One*, Bladerunner, Solyent Green, Terminator, 2001, Alien, Moon, Robocop, Close Encounters, The Thing, The Andromeda Strain, Planet of the Apes, The Daleks Invade Earth, ...
edit* not sure it's technically sci-fi.
