Why do people feel the need to invest massive amounts of their 'hard earned' to rust away on their drive.? ??? WHAT IS THE ATTRACTION OF BUYING BRAND NEW CARS...Eh..? ??? When your're sat at some traffic lights in the middle of winter with the rain and snow pelting down upon us , I often ask myself why do people bother so much.Stupid /daft in my opinion.

I love it when people rationalize the purchase of a new car by telling themselves it's an investment........If i gave my bank manager £21,000 of my money, then went back in 3 years time anticipating a nice little return on it only to find that it was now worth £7,000 i'd lynch the buffoon for his flagrant mis-management .Yet people effectively do this when buying a brand new car.
Still,if you can afford the depreciation,it is a nice if expensive ego massage! ;D

Boring answer is new cars typically have relatively high fuel economy and minimal maintenance costs. If you use your car extensively your running costs will rapidly dwarf the purchase price. Oh, and they are more likely not to let you down when you most need them to start

You can make the same argument about expensive restuarant meals, holidays, clothes etc.
If something makes you feel good, then its a worthy investment, as you are healthier and happier with it. Provided it doesn't leave you short of cash and therefore worried about money.
I like nice cars, particularly convertibles, which make no sense at all if you just use financial logic, but I dont plan to be the richest man in the graveyard - you can't take it with you.

That's it...in the words of the great George Hamilton IV
You ask me why I drive a hot rod coupe DeLuxe With three carburetors straight stick shift souped up engine High compression heads and overdrive - huh! If you don't know I ain't gonna tell you from now on it's up to you fellow I think you know just what I'm talking about

mumf, for once you're right If I didn't need a new car cos of my disability, hand controls and power stuff etc, I'd be so tempted by a classic (and no depreciation)

Same question could be asked as to why people swill 7 pints a night down their necks or smoke 40 fags a day (which also has the side benefit of killing you)
Infact it could be said as to why do people spend thousands watching overpaid primadonnas kicking bit of plastic around !

Well I've just been down to Bath and back . Accident between junction 15 & 14.... 30 minutes delay. Then more roadworks on the south side of Birmingham and another 30 minutes sat in traffic. Then of course you get the 'look at me' type car owners who try and jump the queue in the big Mercedes , BMW'S Audi's etc ...The common denominator being, that they are all sat on their arses behind the wheel of their mobile debt mountain. What fucking pleasure can be gained from 'transport' is beyond me. A radio , steering wheel and electric windows ....wow wee.
It's pathetic..shallow people leading shallow lives .

depends on how comfortable you want to be sat though isn't it. and how you like a smoother ride and less road and wind noise?
I've just test drove a VW Skoda for 3 days, not as comfortable as my current car,but it'll get me from A to B for the next 3 years, just hope it doesn't make my back any worse.

Mumf when you come this way again try coming off M5 at J6 and doing A roads through Kidderminster, Bridgenorth, Shifnal (avoids death by roundabouts at Telford), Newport, Eccleshall, Stoke. When I come up to visit the old man I use this route always to avoid M5/M6 junction carpark.

Yes...I've done that run myself a few times , but the problem I have is that I transport animals and the route is a bit winding and stressfull. It's not so bad with moggies , but with dogs not used to travelling then it's not exactly ideal. I'm off down to Teignmouth with 3 guide dogs soon and I'm bloody dreading it. I may have to consider alternatives if this weekiend is anything to go by!. I'm taking a helper with me to give them a 'piddle stop' but the journey down is a guaranteed nightmare.

Our mutt dunner travel well particularly on the windy roads of Devon so don't envy you that journey as there is no easy route to Teignmouth for your dogs.

I suppose its a matter of choice. You get more enjoyment out of driving a new car than sitting with money in the bank. If you work hard and can afford it so what. You dont see many footballers driving around in shit heaps

Coz if I didn't treat myself once in a while while working my bollocks off for the vast majority of my life then I wouldn't feel there is much point to life.

'ego trip' is a tad unfair.
I have my car on a hire purchase agreement and every 3 years swap it for a new one, no MOT to be paid, cheap tax, low monthly payments and minimal outlay for maintenance, it actually works out better (for me) than purchasing a second hand one.
Personal preference, yes. Ego trip? Certainly not!
