No such thing as a "great" forgotten band.
Nobody has ever forgotten a band they thought was "great".

No such thing as a "great" forgotten band. Nobody has ever forgotten a band they thought was "great". Indeed, some of the bands being mentioned here (ELO, Roxy Music, Supertramp, The Band, The Stranglers, Wizzard etc) can’t be described as forgotten by me. I play them all the time and have done for the last 50 years!

I follow your logic but there is no doubt, that in the past, I've certainly been driving along and a track has come on the radio and I've thought to myself ... well fuck me, I'd forgotten all about this lot, they used to be great back in the day.
At the same time, I think describing bands like ELO, Roxy Music, Supertramp, The Band, The Stranglers etc. as 'forgotten', is indeed, a bit mad.
The post from iancransonsknees, on the previous page, I think nails it ...
Budgie 'Breadfan' is certainly a track I haven't listened to or thought about for many, many years and a band I'd forgotten even existed but they were certainly a great band back in the day. Likewise The Music (also in his post), I remember when the ads first came out for their reunion concert at Temple Newsam and thinking to myself, jeez I'd forgotten all about these ... I used to absolutely love them at the time.
Me, could I name somebody? Well, no because I guess I'd have to remember them to actually tell you who they were and then, they'd (of course) instantly no longer be forgotten (to me anyway), which is essentially the point you're making.

No such thing as a "great" forgotten band. Nobody has ever forgotten a band they thought was "great". Not so sure Not much of a music fan as little I actually like but found some old vinyl a few days ago still boxed up from when I moved here. Had totally forgotten a lot of them...The Outcasts etc and this lot who I used to play their album a lot. Doesn't sound so great to me though to be honest, actually is a bit naff now but really liked back in my mullet days

I think it’s more a case of I wonder what happened to them? The Farm The LA’s The Shamen Franz Ferdinand Hard Fi Adorable Jamiraqui Traffic Badfinger Hard Fi were doing a one off Stars of CCTV anniversary show last I heard. Their last album was as good as their unfairly overplayed and ridiculously catchy first. It was that commercial friendly I think it's ubiquitous presence did them no favours with the music snobs. I saw them late on at the Sugarmill and The Wulfrun touring this: youtube.com/playlist?list=PLC9E5D8018FD76DACI'd definitely buy tickets again.

Some great shouts here but yet to be mentioned are Ireland's finest...
Whipping Boy
Heartworm got a rerelease last year and still sounds astonishingly good. They were about to break through in 95 but got shat on from a great height by a tidal wave of britpop. Amazing band.
Also, The Perfect Disaster undoubtedly a more forgotten band than their peers Spacemen 3 who are pretty widely respected I think.

other forgotten bands include - Shed 7 The Bluetones The La's i always think James dont quite get the recognition they deserve as well. I’d completely forgotten about James. I used to play their Greatest Hits to death about 20 years ago. It’s time for me to revisit them, “Alexa, play the top songs by James”.

The Auteurs and Stereolab stand out there for me. Flowered Up were shit! A classic case of the London music press desperate for their own Madchester scene.

Prefer to call lesser known than forgotten but a few I've seen as support acts or at festivals , The Railway Children, who opened for the Smiths , Xmal Deutschland, a sterling goth act in the 80s and Morcheeba, had a few hits and they were lucky enough to NEARLY have me as a guest guitarist in Vancouver in the late 90s ,but didn't happen. Always think UK Subs don't get the kudos they deserve either.

I'm about halfway through listening to albums from every year since 1950, and I've been compiling a playlist of hidden/forgotten gems: No such thing as a "great" forgotten band. Agreed. They are all still big bands IMO. Far from forgotten and won't be for many decades. Audioweb New Fast Automatic Daffodils South Regular Fries Lo Fidelity Allstars Add N to X My Life Story The Auteurs Super_collider BIS Meat Beat Manifesto i Monster Flowered Up Stereolab And some local bands I love(d): Skin Tight Toy The Mittens Agent Blue Alfa 9 (still a going concern as far as I know - I saw them live before the pandemic) (and dare I mention) The Cakes That's more like it! I've only heard of about half of those. My Life Story reformed in recent years, and I thought about seeing them. I think BIS and Stereolab might be back too, along with a few others. Symposium 3 Colours Red Ultrasound Mansun Bobbie Gentry Margo Guryan Silver Sun Honeycrack Husky Rescue Melys Number One Cup QFX Superdrag Irma Thomas Marlena Shaw Rialto Tiger Urusei Yatsura Longpigs The Soft Boys Some great shouts here but yet to be mentioned are Ireland's finest... Whipping Boy Heartworm got a rerelease last year and still sounds astonishingly good. They were about to break through in 95 but got shat on from a great height by a tidal wave of britpop. Amazing band. Also, The Perfect Disaster undoubtedly a more forgotten band than their peers Spacemen 3 who are pretty widely respected I think. Coincedentally, I listened to Whipping Boy's Heartworm yesterday. I'm on 1995 in my odyssey of years. Teenage Fanclub (forgotten by many*) and Oasis will probably be my top 2. *but called "the best band in the world" by Kurt Cobain and "the second best band in the world by Liam Gallagher

The 12 minute Andy Weatherall edit of Weekender is a tour de force that any band would be proud to have in their back catalogue! I knew you were going to say that! They played it on 6Music a few weeks back. It's crap! Up there with the worst prog rock indulgences, along with nonsense vocals. The edited version is just about bearable, I guess! It's On is probably the best thing they ever did, but it's not saying much. May the Maher brothers rest in peace.
