Reading the classic album thread and some of the choices made, got me thinking about groups who are never mentioned now. I remember ELO being huge in the 70s, but maybe a bit too square for modern critics. My personal choice for a great forgotten band would be the Stranglers. Great output between 77-82 and never readily slotted into a particular genre. Any other suggestions?

I liked both those bands mate. saw ELO at Bingley Hall Stafford when they had to take part of the roof off to get the flying saucer in. Saw the Stranglers at Victoria Hall - that was a great show too. With Itunes and stuff, not really sure what qualifies as a forgotten band though? Styx, Yes, Rainbow, Tears for Fears? Saw Go West in Buxton a couple of years ago, they're still good but maybe not great? Do you remember Be Bop Deluxe - I thought they were cool?

Stranglers great shout.
As are Inspiral carpets charlatons forgotten because of oasis and the roses.
The kinks get lost in the who/Beatles/stones pack.
And Terence Trent d'arby. People forget how good that debut album was. Massive seller

Bill Nelson the singer and guitarist is absolutely class. He still records and does tours.

Pretzel, awesome! Remember me and my mum buying milk and alcohol, 99p from woolies in castle. Great nomination. Thanks.. I was quite pleased when my kids told me they were into R&B, until I found it wasn't the kind of R&B that The Feelgoods played ???

The Au Pairs.
Criminally overlooked at the time ... superb lyrics from Lesley Woods, if their debut album 'Playing With A Different Sex' was released tomorrow for the very first time, it would be receiving rave reviews everywhere - it completely stands the test of time.

Completely agree. What a record! Another great forgotten band here...

Wizard, saw The Fall at Glastonbury in '92. One of the best gigs I've seen. Really ought to dig those 80s Fall albums out.

wizzard of dribble. That's a great list of bands. How about The Comsat Angels. I saw them at Salford uni many years ago. They were support to an upcoming band from Ireland. U2..... Waiting for a miracle great song. Toyah Wilcox was a decent performer, I got right to the front of the stage, she would often get her assets out during the show.
