I bought some remote controlled cut-off plugs from Maplin for all my standby appliances which work very well. Before I go to bed I knock all of them off to prevent those appliances sitting on standby all night.
Combined with energy saver light bulbs I'm using 2/3 of the electricity units I was for the same billing period last year, according to my bill statement.

I'm sick of getting shafted by our bill. Were they expensive?
