was up Keswick at the weekend with the lads walking.Stopped at the queens hotel. From there we walked through the town and up Skiddaw, back down to the car park, turned left across the fields up and down the hilly lanes into thelkeld.Into the salutation arms for a few beers, picked up the old railway track and walked back into keswick and the queens hotel. How far do you reckon we walked?( we thought 18/20 mile) PS I was blowin out of my arse going up Skiddaw.

I'd say you'd walked 15-16 miles.

Me and my lady went to the lakes last weekend. Stayed at the Old England Hotel in Bowness, second time we have stayed there lovely place. Anyhoo, we walked down to the car ferry, crossed the lake then proceeded to turn right and walk down the side of Windermere, however we couldn't get across to the basin so had to walk down some winding roads which took us all around the back of the lake and into Ambleside, where refreshments were taken in as my Mrs was about to faint. We then proceeded through the back end of Ambleside on the other side of the lake and walked back down the main road to Bowness. Now I'm reckoning it was about 20 miles, but I'm not too sure. Forner any ideas? The weather by the way was excellent all weekend.

You guys need to buy Memory Map for your computers! That will give you (and me) a better figure for your milage. Give me a few minutes and I'll work it out for you.
Better still, get a GPS!

Eddy. Obviously I don't know the exact route you took up and down Skiddaw but if you took the tourist path up and down and didn't divert to Skiddaw Little Man or Lonscale Fell then Memory Map gives the figure as 14.4 miles and 3,700 ft of ascent. As Memory Map has a tendancy to underestimate distances (due to the operator tending to cut corners and not take account of all the "wiggles" in the route), I'd say you probably actually walked 16 miles and climbed 4,000 ft of ascent.
Memory Map gives the time as 7 hrs of walking (excluding stops) but that is a "raw" figure and you would programme in a different figure per mile adjusted for the amount of ascent as you got experience of the programme and compared its predictions to your time.

RAF - very difficult to work out your exact route but I drew my line along the west side of Windermere along the lakeside footpath and through High and Low Wray. Then mostly along the A591 back from Ambleside. I got 15.4 miles and 1,200 ft of ascent. But the milage could have been as high as 20 miles depending upon your exact route.
The only way to judge that sort of walk accurately is to get a GPS. Garmin Gekos are usually available on ebay for about £80 but a fully functioning mapping GPS will set you back £300.
PS - I'm surprised the Mrs didn't call off the engagement - that is a heluva walk with a lot of road work - I'd rather climb a mountain! ;D

Put it this way Forner, when we were leaving Ambleside she started to limp with blisters and I reckon it's a good 3-4 miles back to the hotel from there. She wanted to get a taxi but I made her push on through. Fair play to her, she hobbled it all the way without so much as a crossed word. I was well proud of her as she wasn't really prepared for that kind of walk straight off. Needless to say she conked out for a couple of hours when we got back and her legs were painful for the next few days, but I think she really enjoyed it, well she must have because the wedding is still on! ;D. I'll make sure she is better prepared next time. Cheers for the info, it probably seemed longer due to the hills. If we start walking more regularly I shall invest in a GPS for deffo.

You could have compromised and caught the bus RAF - they run every hour at a minimum from Ambleside to Bowness/Windermere.

I know, but I wanted to finish the walk and I don't think she wanted to let me down bless her.

Eddy, Fornside is pretty spot on with that figure. You'll find that people who don't do a lot of walking seriously overestimate how far they've walked and, in some cases, are distraught when they're told they've actually walked 3 miles instead of the 10 they thought they had

Eddy, yes I did include the detour from the carpark by Latrigg and along the lanes to the Salutation in Threlkeld and then had you descending to pick up the old railway track just west of the village.
I live about 3 miles south of Threlkeld in St Johns in the V ale - at Fornside as it happens!

Squareball I wasn`t at all sure how far we had gone,it was hard work going up Skiddaw.I expected the tourist route to be a simple stroll.I was knackered when i got up there, but it was worth it the views were fantastic.Fornside said we climbed about 4000ft.But i thought skiddaw was only just over 3000ft high.i must pay more attention in future.Love the lakes for walking, golf`s good up that way as well.

Skiddaw is just over 3,000 ft high but you will have done some ups and downs on the way up and on the way down - they all add up but you need a GPS or a computer mapping programme to find out how much they add to the figure.
PS - Skiddaw is actually the easiest of the Lake District's four 3,000+ ft mountains. If you got tired on Skiddaw - the other three (Scafell, Scafell Pike and Helvellyn) would have left you REALLY knackered! ;D

Somebody died on Broad Stand (Scafell) on the Saturday so the helicopter wasn't linked to that.
