Just wanted to get some opinions on the lad from us neutrals.
The press talk about him as if he's the son of god. I view him as currently the most over-hyped and overrated player on the planet right now.
He is a centre back that can't defend and so has been played centre mid or right back. His goal for man utd was described as sublime on motd - it was a standard goal, nothing sublime about it. He made garth crooks' (i know, why listen to his opinion) team of the week on bbc at centre back, despite not even playing there, whereas huth and shawcross who defended wonderfully yesterday didn't get a mention.
what is the fuss about this 'wonderkid'??? I have never seen anything more than a very average utility player - a young phil neville, who will most likely never be as good as phil neville has been for everton.

I think he'll be one of England's centre backs for years to come. Put aside your hatred of Man Utd and look at him more closely.

Ultimately I'd like him for England in a holding role. I rate him highly.

Crouch made him look a very ordinary centre back

I think a lot of people forget that he's only 19.
There's no doubt that he's got a lot to learn, but with Fergie's guidance and a lot more time playing in the Prem, I imagine that he'll become a quality centre back/defensive midfielder before you know it.

What others have said really.
Looks a quality midfielder, but is definately lacking (at the minute) as a centre back.

I think he'll be the best centre half in the world in another 5-6 years

He's a good allround player, who hasn't yet found his role. The problem with being versatile is that you end up being messed about, rather than making a position your own.

perhaps i need to reassess my opinions of him given the responses on here. I must be biased - he didn't get a sniff of an england call up whilst playing for blackburn, but immediately in the side when he signs for man utd - i cannot stand that. the same way phil neville had dozens of caps for england whilst playing for man utd, but was never called up when playing by far the best football of his career at everton. il have to give jones another chance.

I think he's good but as other's have said, the fact that he's not a star in any one position makes me wonder whether he'll be one of those who falls between two stalls, a bit like Alan Smith who was intermittently very good in a number of positions but ultimately a disappointment. Currently I'd say Shawcross was a better CB than Jones, but clearly Jones has the potential to be 10 times the player, because he can pass and run with the ball.

was talking about him with some mates last night. United fan pipes up with "you'll love him when he's englands best player". He looks very promising but he is being overhyped, and he already has that horrible "united arrogance" about him, waving his arms around and diving like a puff. The goal at the weekend wasnt that great either, it was terrible defending IMO.

Stood out a mile when I first saw him play with Blackburn, you just knew that he would become a great player . . . . yes, great.
As one who is (unfortunately!) old enough to remember the great Duncan Edwards, Phil Jones is rightly being compared with him.
Injuries aside, ManU and England have a fantastic utility player on their hands for the next 10 to 15 years. Personally, I rate him that highly!

Phil Jones is the real deal. Overrated? Over-hyped? Definitely not.
The talk of him being a central defender is purely because that's where HE wants to play. SAF, Capello and pretty much most coaches that know him as a footballer all think he is going to be the next best defensive midfielder in European (and probably World) football.
There's no doubt he would make a great defender though and I guess if he really wants to play that position so badly, he will do.

i still think it is wrong that depite justifying his place in the england squad it was his transfer to utd that got him included in the first place

i still think it is wrong that depite justifying his place in the england squad it was his transfer to utd that got him included in the first place he did miss a lot of last season through injury though, had it not been for this injury i think we would've seen him in an england shirt a lot earlier.

one and half games for the shit and he's in!

Played all season for Wigwam and not a snif. one and half games for the shit and he's in! i never denied that it does happen.....but we havent mentioned Cleverley or Wellbeck anywhere in this thread, i was merely stating that in my opinion, if Jones had not been injured for a large chunk of last season, he wouldve been picked a lot sooner.

Well we'll never know but another is Smalling. 2 sub appearances and straight into the England fold!
Whichever way you look at it players, for whatever reason, stand a better chance in progressing to the England squad if they're at Man U. Would smalling have got anywhere near if he'd have stayed at Fulham? I doubt it.

It will be interesting to see how his career develops.
From what i've seen of him, I think he will make a cracking midfielder (Huge ability to drive forward with the ball, decent enough but not outstanding defensive ability and a decent pass on him) in a few years time, but as we know, football is a strange old game at times and you never know how a player will develop.

Right now he is quality due to the fact he is a unusually fast and skillful for his size. This for me is where it will go wrong in the near future he will burn out and lose his pace.

He reminds me of Glen Johnson. Not so good at the back but fearless and exciting going forward! I think he will only improve and will be a great player in the future!

Could well turn into an England legend. And so far appears a fairly normal sound bloke. Then again so did Ryan Giggs.........

I thought he was average at the beginning of the season but when he came to the Brit I was very impressed. I rate him highly now after seeing more games and He's a quality player at 19 ffs!

He's a decent player, but he needs to play in midfield to be really effective. He put us on the back foot several times at the Britannia playing in midfield.
(This might be more to do with our midfield though rather than Jones' skill. ;D )

He's a fearless beast in midfield. 19 years old and was not in the least bit intimidated by Xavi and Iniesta in the Spain midfield. In fact he made them decidedly uncomfortable at times.
Great prospect.
