Nice on Roots, can't say I've ever seen that one before. Good job we didn't have message boards in the those day. Heaven only knows what March would've said about George Eastham's questionable tackling ability and as for Banksy's attempt at saving Law's header...

Yes (unfortunately as it was that long ago) I was there. In fact if you look closely for an extrememly good looking young fella standing just above the Century Oils advert you can pick me out. Well, I know who I am anyway! ;D Can't even remember Frankie Burns playing days for United, but I do recall Brian Dowling going on to make his name on Big Brother. BTW - Cracking corner from TC!

Have I been saying Mike Pejic’s name wrong for the past 30 odd years?

I think Hugh Johns liked Dennis Law - "The king" and all that stuff, you couldn't really be so partisan as a commentator these days could you?

Waddo had it widened to accommodate our over-lapping fullbacks.

I was at the game, standing at the bottom right hand side of the Boothen with my Grandad and Uncle (God bless both of 'em).
They used to reckon Denis Law always had an injury the week before he was due to face Denis Smith so you rarely saw Denis Law play at The Vic, the funny thing is Denis Law played in that game but Smithy wasn't in the Stoke side (nor was the great Jimmy Greenhoff) that day, so maybe there was some truth in the folklore!
I once saw a quote some time ago from Denis Law in which he said something along the lines that he should have had a season ticket in the paddock at Stoke as that's where he always nearly ended up when Smithy tackled him.

Thanks for that. I was there, to the left of the goal at the Boothen End. I'm the one in the jeans with the scarf.

Huw Johns used to really annoy me with his Mike Pay-cheque.
A couple of things stand out. The game (albeit highlights ) was played at a fair pace. Maybe it was one of those rare games not played in 6 inches of mud.
When you see the adverts round the ground - either cigarettes or local companies - Hanley Garage, Century Oils. Getting on tv in those days was a real bonus for the sponsors.
Why was that bit in the Boothern behind the goal left empty. I seem to recall other clubs had that as well. Looks really odd

I've been getting a few bits and pieces from this site based out in sweden mate. I paid £4 for that 5 minute clip. Banksy flapping at that header ;D

Excellent film again - many thanks.
I was almost certainly there, though I have no recollection, I must admit. I would have been in the Stoke End, and I am guessing Man Utd would have had around 7-8,000 (at least) at the Vic that day. This was also the season we knocked them out of the QF of the FA Cup - a couple of months after this game.
Couple of other points:
- the pronunciation of Pejic's name is interesting, although compared with what Joe Mercer used to call him (Pea-Jack), Johns was relatively restrained.
- the space behind the goal at the Boothen. I agree it must have been for "missile" throwing, and of course others had something similar, as noted above - at Old Trafford it was a huge space. At the Vic it looks like a token gesture
- Banksy wafting at the Law header. I agree with the comments above. How he didn't save it with ease, let alone have a decent attempt, is baffling. Completely misjudged the flight I would say, and thought it was going wide. If any keeper did that today, we'd be hanging, drawing and quartering him. More forgiving times.
- Willie Morgan - terrific player. Even today I suspect he would destroy many defences.
- Star Soccer. Watching that video, and the commentaries in particular, I can almost taste and smell the roast beef, Yorkshire puddings, and roasties. Jumpers for goalposts, anyone?

I didnt start going till the following season, but what surprised me about this video was the Stoke end was fullish with about equal numbers of home and away fans on it- while the Boothen looks half full

I was , as normal then , on the stoke end - apparently you had to be a big boy to go on the boothen ! ? It wasn't until the next season that i was able to become a " boothen ender " - some kind of progression you had to go through !

I always remember the fantastic atmosphere at a packed Vic in the early 70's, however it doesn't come across in that video at all. Much better these days!
