I saw what was one of his first games for us, a pre season friendly against Reading at the old bomb site that was Elm Park, in August 1979.
If I remember rightly he scored two cracking goals that day, and I thought we had a new star on our hands. Never seemed to fulfill the early promise though.

Bombsite is an accurate description of that ground mate ;D

A winger mainly played on the left. He had his good days and though tall was very slender and could be taken out of the game. He was not gifted with lots of pace but a skillful left footer similiar to Hoestra but not quite the showmanship. He was good to watch but if he had had more conifidence I suspect he would have been an early version of Hoestra. I remember him as a right winger. ???

I remember his name, Loek, was pronounced Lurk, at least by Stokies. Lurk. What a great name for a striker.

Does anybody remember Stoke's supposed pre-season friendly against his former club, AZ 67 at the vic? I say supposed because it seemed like he had a few scores to settle and declared a one man war on his old team mates, with the rest of the Stoke team and fans looking on in bemusement. I can't remember anything else about the game other than that

Ursem was ace. He was chairlifted around by fans on the pitch at the end of the 80/81 season. Met him many times. He hated n ot being in the first team and told me and my mates to kick the gaffers arse for him. He also had very smooth hands.

Smithy was the year after when we beat WBA 3-0 to stay up...and send Leeds down. Ahhh one of my favourites. Leeds had lost to West Brom the week before meaning West Brom were safe. It was then down to either us or Leeds to fill the last relegation place. Unfortunately for Leeds, their fans had got slightly annoyed at losing to West Brom and decided to wreck the joint. This didn't go down too well with the West Brom fans, many of whom openly stated they wanted us to win that night. This seemed to rub off on the West Brom team who treated the match like a pre-season friendly and basically rolled over for us - a habit they've since found hard to break. We stayed up. Leeds went down. Happy days.

Alan Clarke was Leeds manager. He was at the game and left at HT. Ronnie Allen was WBA manager and after the game I saw him being interviewed and he was utterly indifferent to the defeat. He wasn't remotely bothered. I remember our players leaving the ground celebrating as if we'd won the European Cup or something.

I remember we played Nijmegan in a friendly and won 4-1. Smithy scored a bullet header from a corner.

Craig Wally - you are thinking of John Tudor. Think you are right it was Tudor 2 on debut , and never scored again !

Craig Wally - you are thinking of John Tudor. Think you are right it was Tudor 2 on debut , and never scored again ! No he scored the following home game v Derby in a 1-0 win. My first ever game. That was his last goal. Ursem was a midfielder who I agree had talent but was slow on the ball sometimes. Wasn't a bad player though with an eye for a pass.

If you want to hear some good and true Loek Ursem stories ask Terry Bates landlord of the Staff of Life in Stoke, they were good mates and had some wild nights together.

I’m in Alkmaar (home of AZ 67 F.C.) at the end of November. If anyone knows if Loek lives nearby I could give him a call !
