A name i remember from when i first started watching the potters but seeing as i were only a nipper i remember nothing about his style of play, how good he was/wasn't etc. Surely he was the first dutchman to play for stoke?

Loek Ursem became the first foreign player to play for Stoke City having being brought to the club by Alan Durban from AZ '67. He spent four years at the Victoria Ground making 40 appearances for the club scoring 7 goals. He returned to the Netherlands in 1982.

I think he was the first foreign player to play for Stoke although there are differing interpretations of "foreign"

Ahhh, I was away at Uni then and was too drunk/lazy/broke/feckless to get home . I should still remember his name though.

He was on fire for us early on in what I think was the 81/82 season and them suffered a really nasty injury He went on loan to Sunderland and ironically came on as sub for them against us at the Vic - Very funny as I remember well the Stokies singing 'Ursem, Ursem give us a wave' which he duly obliged when he ran onto the pitch I remember attending many a reserve team game that Loek played in and he had a cracking free kick on him, scoring some memorable goals in front of all 40 of us !

Did he not score two goals on his debut for us - one of which was a flying header from outside the box infront of the Boothen?
Or..
I'm getting old and my memory is not what it was

He scored an unusual goal against someone where he ran over the ball and flicked it up before scoring. It was something he did in the warm up, but I'm sure he scored a goal like that in a match. He was a bit lightweight for english football.

A skilful player, perhaps not quite suited to the physical demands of our league.

A winger mainly played on the left. He had his good days and though tall was very slender and could be taken out of the game. He was not gifted with lots of pace but a skillful left footer similiar to Hoestra but not quite the showmanship. He was good to watch but if he had had more conifidence I suspect he would have been an early version of Hoestra.

He was known by some (certainly by a few of my friends) as Leek Burslem. I was initially amazed that he was our first (proper) overseas player, but on reflection that seems perfectly right. (Carlos Babington might have preceded him by quite a few years if things had gone differently).
I also have a feeling that we thought we were getting an Arnold Muhren or Frans Thijsen. Not quite in their league, but very decent touch.
The crowds that season (in the link above) are truly amazing. And not just ours. Less than 40,000 for Man U away.

I'm sure he was playing at the first game I ever went to against Leyton Orient in 1978/79 season. We beat them 5-1. As I remember it, we were 5-0 up and he saved a shot on the line with his hand by tipping it over the bar and they scored from the pen. Why the hell he did that when we were already 5-0 up...
Wasn't there also a song in the boothen that went 'Ursem Boys, Ursem Boys, lace up boots and corduroys' like that Sham 69 song 'Hersham Boys'? Or was that just made up by me and me mates!?

libraking - He did not sign until August 79.
The O's was that the one delayed 1/2 an hour due to heavy rain and went 5 up in the first half.
