Bit of serious advice needed guys I have been working in a team of 10 people for telecommunications company for a couple of years now (internet kinda stuff i do by the way for any remotely interested), and my senior boss has been promoted to marketing director or some tofty position, and so my direct manager is moving up to senior manager. I have covered for my boss a couple of times when he is on holidays, training, etc and i have enjoyed it. It is kinda weird as im 25 and the other guys/girls are like 30 - 40yrs of age. Last night i was asked if i would want to become manager of the team, massive compliment to be honest and would be more brass, car, etc long term. It would be 3 month initially and if i have done well would more than likely become permanant. Thing is - do i really want this at the moment ?? nice perks and cv wise excellent etc, but what will i lose. I hear that u lose friends, people look and talk to u different etc and that management is stressful. i am currently quite happy in my job, life is laid-back (amsterdam after all haha) and im still young. I also enjoy getting drunk and getting up to mischieve and stuff - and i guess i would need to cut back on this if i took the offer up. It is also a very hard team to manage with most of the team between 30 - 40 and very strong personalities, points of view etc so it will be hard to get their respect / approval Other side is that this oppurtunity wont come along again within next 2 or 3 years i dont think, if at all to be honest, and it could lead to better and bigger things. There is only so long i would want to stay in my current job as well to be honest. Parents are like "you have to do it, etc" "it will make u grow up,etc ;D ) so wanted a neutral view Anyone moved from been managed to becoming management ?? Anyone got experiences on this kinda thing ??

Much as some of the prospects of being the manager of people you know can seem unattractive, if you don't do it, you could get some other twat, and then all your mates will be pissed off anyway.
And as it's only temporary to begin with, that'll give you the opportunity to try it out and see if you like it. You can always turn down the permanent appointment if you hate it.

Go for it mate, i've managed loads of people who i class as good friends and it's always worked well, long as if you don't start changing things for the sake of it and start pissing people off just cus you are now the boss. it will be fine in my experience, think of the cash and how you can spend it in the club shop !!

go for it mate - at 25 your not a "youth" anymore so take the job be damn good at it (i'm sure you will) and as you seem like the kind of guyb who'll keep his feet on the ground it shouldnt impact on any friendships you have.
i did a something simlarish (only 4 or 5 people to manage) thing two years ago at 23/24 and it was the best decision.
good luck,
;D
