Ive just had my computer upgraded and Windows XP installed, ive never used it before so im new to it.
Every 20 miniutes or so while online a window will pop up saying "Messenger Service"
And it's usually advertising girls that have just set up web cams, my sister has also complained of this.
I use Internet Exporer 6
I never had this problem with Windows 98 where i also used Internet Explorer 6.
Anyone know what it is and how to get rid of it?

It is the MSN messenger which automatically comes with XP. To get rid, exit it because if its what i think it is it will come up next to the clock, then get rid of by right clicking. If not, get a pop up stopper

Its not like normal pop ups, its not in a browser window, the browser doesnt even have to be open and it will just come up on the screen. next time it happens i will take a screen shot.
It still happens even if i am not signed into MSN or Windows Messenger

stick zonealarm on from www.zonelabs.com (free firewall) and download adaware (lavasoft), and anti virus AVG from grisoft.com all this is free and will stop the cack filtering through. Then after this is installed, you need to download MSM messenger 6.1, this is more secure than the previous versions and will get rid of the ad patch in versions 4 of msn....

This is nowt to do with MSN Messenger! Windows has build in a machine to machine messenger. This is a throw back to Windows 3.11 Workgroups . . why they still leave this shite in XP I dunno as no bugger ever uses it anymore. The easiest way to get rid of it and one that needs no downloading or spend any cash on software, which they often like to try worry people with in the messages is to disable the Windows Messenger in the services. Thats it! So go to you control panel and open up the services look down the list for Windows Messenger highlight it and disable the bugger, it'll put it a message say this will stop you from recieving messages (!) just say Yes and thats it. No more annoying shite. ;D Enjoy!

Yep altiscfc is right, some buggers have found a way to make the messenger display advertising. Its mainly meant for large corporate networks so admin can send quick messages to users. But MS being MS they left a loophole in it meaning that it can be used for advertising, there is a fix you can download - just go to www.microsoft.com and search for messenger fix or look in the knowledge base. If you dunna wanna do that, go to admin tools (in control panel), computer management, services and applications, services. Scroll down to messenger and double click, select the stop button and then change startup type from automatic to disabled. Don't worry about things being dependant cus nothing is on a home pc.

Dazza,
Can I recommend that you install (if you haven't already) Service Pack 1. Also pays dividends to let the Auto Update service run, to automatically download and install patches to the system as and when it finds them.

To stop them until your next reboot select Start, Run type services.msc and press enter. In the right hand pane right click Messenger and chose stop. To stop it all together download 'Shoot the Messenger' from grc.com/stm/shootthemessenger.htm
