I know this has been copied on another thread but this deserves a thread of its own.. SHOWER OF PISSBy Ian Appleyard Exclusive SHEFFIELD Wednesday have been fined £2,000 by the Football League for breaking rules regarding loan players. Owls manager Brian Laws picked six loan players in the matchday 16 for last month's Championship game against Stoke City – exceeding the maximum of five permitted under League rules. If the board of the Football League had bowed to pressure from Stoke and reviewed the result of the game, which ended in a 1-1 draw, it could have had a significant effect on the both the relegation battle and promotion race. However, since only four of the loan signings actually took to the field during the game, they have ruled that a financial penalty is sufficient. The League will inform all its members of the decison today and make the decision public soon after. In recent years, both Leeds United and Swansea City have been rapped on the knuckles for commiting similar offences in relation to loan players. The Owls, who host Plymouth Argyle in a televised game on Monday, no longer have six loan players on their books as striker Enoch Showunmi has returned to Bristol City. On-loan Sunderland midfielder Graham Kavanagh will miss out on Monday due to a hamstring injury, but Frank Songo'o, Ben Sahar, Adam Bolder and Bartosz Slusarski are all likely to feature. Laws, meanwhile, has stressed the need for the Owls to hold their nerve in the knowledge that the club could drop back into the relegation zone this weekend without kicking a ball. Leicester City, who occupy the third relegation spot, are just one point behind the Owls and host bottom-of-the-table Colchester United tomorrow, whose relegation has already been confirmed. Laws said: "There is every chance that we could drop back into the bottom three on Saturday, but we have to hold our nerve and remember that our destiny is in our own hands. "We cannot rely on anyone else doing us favours," he added. "There are seven or eight teams still involved in this scrap and we have to look on our final four games as four Cup finals." I await Stoke's response ![>:(](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/MK1XRTh9jLIKdOoyx512.gif)

4 games to go, I say we should include all 7 of our loan players in the squad, whats an £8,000 fine when we could win £60m by going up!
The Football League have bottled it again!

I just hope the long-running wrangle that will enevitably follow this announcement doesn't overshadow the season.
Hold-on, we've already thrown this season away ...

To be honest I didn't see any other punishment given the precedents of Leeds and Swansea.
However, perhaps it's time for the FL and the FA to start next season with a clear directive. Anyone breaching the loans rule will be deducted 3 points, regardless of the result. This is what they did about the "going into administration" cheating which allowed certain clubs to retain their status and effectively start again without debts.
10 points deduction for serious cheating, 3 points for minor cheating. Seems reasonable to me.

Like it has been said, We should put all or as many loanees in the side as we want. A 2k fine is loose change.
Although I'd hate to seem Little Ant lose his place to a loanee ;D

They should change the rules now, and make sure everyone is aware of the rules and punishment!
That way there won't be any problems!
I personally think the rule should be the other team gets the three points and you get a fine for committing the offence. Simply put it is cheating and ignorance to the law does not make it right!

On a "bad news day" TP's like my arrisness (see the Gally thread) has now (amazingly) been surpassed by the Football League's like my arrisness i fear.
Utter bollox.
What's the "hat trick" going to be today then?

That's OK unless you win the game anyway. What reward would you have then? I still think a 3 point deduction is a better rule. The fines can be suspended for any future offence, but make it a BIG fine, maybe £500,000.

£500,000 is a lot of money Alan - Someone like Vale would go out of business if they had to pay that kind of money and I think it is unreasonable!
A 3 point deduction and the game awarded to the other team is fine (3-0 or if the goal diff was better then they can keep that)

I think we all know deep down that this infringement didn't alter the game or result one iota!
I for one wouldn't want us to prosper by being awarded 'dirty' points. If we're going to do it - let's do it in a way that we can all hold our heads up and say at least we did it fairly and without some rediculous manipulation of the system.

Like I say mate, I don't think it actually changed anything - the score or the result, so the one point issue is irrelevent as far as I can see it.
.......... a heavier fine (say £50k) should have been levied though!

I never for a moment thought we would get any points out of this but i do believe SW cheated, and cheated with a purpose. They should have the point deducted plus a heavy fine, it's ironic how their own fans saw the 'oversight' yet the management didn't ???
They cheated and they got away with it they deserve to be relegated

Like you, I also believe that they knew what they were doing - hence the increased fine and/or a points deduction.
All I'm saying is that we shouldn't profit from it, that's all.

Yes i know they did wrong and theyve been fined and throw the book at them for me but to be honest my opinion is that the result wouldnt of changed anyway if they hadn't of played these players?
we got 1 up and sat back in true pulis style
It seems at the minute we're looking at any excuse we can as to why we're drawing games and dropping points etc - if we were really good enough we wouldnt give a shit that someone played an extra loanee
truth is we're bottling it like we're a set of french soldiers whether we like it or not - extra players / ref decisons etc are just clouding it
anyway i have hope and its for 12 points from 4 games which means PARTY PARTY PARTY

y-o-y If we would been allowed to play Zakuani instead of Cort, would that have affected the outcome? 2 wrongs don't make a right but it could have changed the outcome of the game, did you notice how lame Cort was in trying to chse the scorer down?

Post by bayernoatcake on Apr 11, 2008 13:43:56 GMT
That's because Cort is poor defender.
