Hi there folks
Some of you will already know that we had scheduled the next OO game to coincide with the last day of the season when Stoke play Gillingham on May the 9th.
You may also be aware that the F.A have now brought the start times forward to a 1pm kick off.
This creates a problem!
OS and myself feel that running an OO competition before 1pm gives insufficient time for all those that take part, to play their two games then change, then relax with a drink with their friends AND get down to the Brit for the early K.O.
It is lot to ask.
The last OO competition gave everyone the opportunity of playing at least two games! we would like to carry on that opportunity, and clearly to finish in time would mean a VERY early start to our games if we played on the Sunday.
MCF has already mentioned about playing it on the Saturday afternoon, that, imho, would be fine, but it is you folks out there that make such a success of the event so you must have the final say.
Personally I would like to adopt the same format as last time and so give everyone at least two games. I don't think that that is possible if we play the games on the Sunday.
So! because all of you that take part and help to make our competition such a success, YOU need to make the decision about the date and the format of the next competition.
Last time it worked a treat, which means if we can book the Academy for the Saturday it would follow the same pattern as last time, but it is really up to you folks to decide.........Saturday afternoon or very early Sunday morning?
I don't wish for anyone to miss out, so please have your say, its very important that everyone involved or interested, contributes to this thread so that a decision can be made in plenty of time in order to get the Academy booked. At the moment it is booked for the Sunday, and the booking was made before the changes of the league start times.
I will willing book the pitch for the afternoon of the 8th of May, which is the Saturday, if that is what you folks wish.
BUT PLEASE LET ME or OS KNOW BEFORE 29TH OF FEBRUARY!

Tel,
Deffo Saturday avo - it worked great last May, with beers on the Saturday night in the White Lion before the Stoke game the next day. Sunday would just be too rushed.
I know it could be a problem for those out of town Stokies in the UK who may have difficulties stopping over on the Saturday, but what about some of you guys who live in Stoke trying to do a deal with a hotel (Tollgate?) for discount for a block booking for those who need a bed for the night. Alternatively, I'm sure some of us can put people up in our spare rooms (I'm giving jimmyg a bed at my sister's house for a start).

I think Sat pm is the best idea - worked well last May, and gives us plenty of time to get 4 matches played.

How you didn't win the 'Player of the Tournament' last time myatt I'll never know!
Paul Mart banged in 3 or 4 decent 20+ yarders but you were cracking. Which team did you play for?

Well in the semi fair enough; you had you, MCF, MrFlirty and OSS (did he get injured?)...but it always seems like the teams in the final end up with getting the best players from the 3rd and 4th place teams. We even had Robo on ours and when the Jezza/MCF combination was together in the 2nd tournament (thanks to my non-fixing of the teams ) we bought MrFlirty in for the final just so our team resembled Real Madrid even more. I believe I hand-picked/randomly selected you into that team as well myatt. Next time I reckon if we have injuries the players that get to play in the final from the 3rd and 4th teams should be average (or randomly selected, Becks always carrys a note-pad on these days so it would be easily sorted) rather than just letting all the best players come in.

It was like watching Crannie and Overson!

Another thing, I reckon all the managers should have a say in the selection process. Maybe rank the players from 1 to 5 (1 being the better players, 5 being the likes of me) based on the opinions of OS, Tel, Becks and Matty and then each team gets two players from each category. It should (in theory at least) ensure that we have close matches all the way through. Although by the sounds of it, thats what kind of happened in the last one and it didn't really work in the end because of what I've said about players coming in for the final. A team of mart72, MrFlirty, onewaynebiggins, myatt, smee, MCF, Macca, ParaPsych and ThePotterer was always going to win the final wasn't it?!

Pricey, young man!
The substutions that happened for the final imho, were players replacing players who had given an equal contribution in the games that had previously been played!
OSS was subbed he scored in the first game and was injured
The other two players who had to be subbed both had scored for the team and one was our top scorer (Klute)!
So they were replaced with players who had had an equal influence on the teams they had previously played for.
After the final, the four managers agreed that if the situation arises again then the two managers NOT involved in the final would nominate the replacement players so that has been sorted.
The whole event has gathered momentum since the first set of games and we are all experiencing the 'learning curve' of running this event, and we ARE making progress and I'm sure the next one will see even further progress.

But you replaced OSS (a midfielder) with onewaynebiggins, who along with MrFlirty and myatt have been the 3 best defenders in Occasional history! You then had MCF and Macca who although outshone on the day by the long range drives of PaulMart are probably the two best midfielders! Boooooo, hiss. I'm an Occasionals statto! ;D Edit- Look at my post count, and I'm going now so it will remain like that for a good while!

Pricy I think you are right about the last final. The players that came in were far better than those being replaced ( I mean poor Para, who came in for me if memory serves me right, having his football ability compared to that of OSS ). I think that this was sorted after the game though. It was decided by ME that any player not making the final would be replaced by a player chosen by the 2 losing managers from the first round games who therefore have no advantage to gain. Only then IMHO can there be no cry's from the sideline's of...... FIX, FIX, FIX, FIX, FIX ;D ;D ;D ;D OSS (The now retired OO liability )

A few pointers for the next OO Tel
* A first aider
* All team managers to be present during the drawing of the teams, quite a few people thought that Your and OSs teams were much stronger than anyone elses....
* If anyone has a video camera, and who is willing to video the game? copies could then be sold and donated to the DL trust...just an idea?!
smeegs
Is there a Managers space due to becks retirement?
