I work for a charity and sometimes take a disabled fella down to the match. He has had a season ticket for years, due to his disability he needs a carer to escort him for him to be able to attended games.
I went down to the ticket office today to renew his season ticket and i have been told that because he doesn't have a physical disability and thus doesn't claim high mobility benefits he wont be able to get himself a disabled ticket, The guy has a learning disability and is living in a 24 hour care setting he is disabled but because it is mental not physical the club will not make concessions. Has anybody else had this problem? How did you get on? If nobody has heard of problems like these what are your views on them? I have the email address and phone number to the disability liaison officer for the club and will be getting in touch with him, however i don't feel to optimistic.

Providing that the concerned person gets an higher rate of either the mobility or care component then youre entitled to be their carer free of charge.

That wasn't the case down at the ticket office Tazi i turned up with the paper work to show that the social services fund the guy for 24/7 care and that he is on benefits, also paper work to say that he has a learning disability. They said they changed there policy and only accept high rate mobility and that only high rate mobility can claim for disabled concessions. The guy sits in block 31 im pretty sure you would know who he is if you sit around there. You would also know they guy would not be abel to attened on his own.

Lazymatt.
Totally understand mate because not only do i work with people that have learning disabilities but i am also aware that there are a vast majority that would not be able to attend without a carer. Good luck mate because if they are indeed correct then it is not fair.
I am pretty sure that when applications were sent out for renewal of season tickets that it states concessions for people that claim the high rate of either care or mobility.

I spoke to the ticket office on the phone Tazi they said i could bring in the benefits forms and that would be fine. I got down there spent 30 mins in the cold rain and got told sorry your claiming for the wrong kind of disability and wont be able to claim im sure that its a misunderstanding but they didn't even have anyone there i could talk to about it. Just some young lad who looked out of his depth when i started to ask questions. It just has left me with this feeling that i wont be able to get it resolved.

It states on their website "go onto download application form for season ticket"
I confirm that i am in reciept of the higher rate level of DLA (care and/or mobility component).
I require and request a disabled helpers ticket.
Good luck mate, and with the footy too.

If this proves to be the case, and what you've been told by the ticket office is true, it would truly shameful of the club, both the decision, and the fact that they couldn't be bothered to write to the - presumably relatively small number of - disabled season ticket holders and their carers. Possibly contrary to the Disability Discrimination Act? Also, if this does prove to be the case, I expect the Football Supporters Federation, chaired by our very own Malcolm Clarke, might be interested. On a lighter note, I used to manage a local charity that provides supported housing for homeless people with mental health needs/mild learning disabilities (aforementioned Malcolm being one of the founders of the organisation). For a number of years, we'd ask the club for free tickets for one match a season - it was always against bloody Grimsby.

Rebelliousjukebox (presumably Robin - how are you, long time no see ! )- My attention has just been drawn to this. Coincidentally, I am meeting the Committee of the National Association of Disabled Supporters tomorrow, and I will discuss the issue with them. I have emailed the thread to their Chair.
