Was in Gambia about 9 years ago
To be honest didn't like it a great deal but know a few who did
A fair few Brits there who moaned about every bloody thing from the heat to the food- not sure what they expected in Africa. As you'd expect a great deal of poverty and expect to be hassled every where you go- don't fall for the old trick - 'come to see my village and see my new baby' etc- translated is please give me an hour to empty the entire contents of your pockets.
Am sure the hotels etc have improved since my stay- mine wasn't too bad to tell you the truth but as usual so many found fault. You will be surrounded by folk wherever you go and even so called school teachers looking for money for supplies etc- my girlfriend at the time bought bag loads of cheap biros with her rather than give them money and handfulls of sweets for the kids.
Enjoy be interesting to hear what it's like now- just don't be a softie and get sucked in

Just texted her to see where we stayed by the way- your hotel name sounds familiar.
She's one of these who can remember the bars, currencies, beer, hotels etc - personally remember very little about eating/drinking out etc except avoiding the hordes of sellers, beggars etc- having spent a lot of time in Cambodia kind of used to it now but that was my first real experience of it and got really irritating after a while

I know the Gambia quite well.It is a very poor country with extreme temperatures 55 degrees c at times.Outside the tourist areas the country is sparsely populated with the main source of income being fishing. The beaches are quite nice but extremely dangerous with rip tides and large waves breaking onto the beaches. It is very cheap to eat out, especially outside the main tourist traps. Take plenty of pens and kids pencils with you in the event of you hiring a car and exploring the south of the country, but be prepared to be 'mugged' at every opportunity.(Not literally) They are a very friendly nation and I have personally lived amongst them so-to-speak in the remote Serekunda region in the southern part of the Gambia.
Things to see and do:..There is wildlife and birdwatching in abundance...There is a nature reserve where you literally stroke the monkeys and also you can take a boat trip up the gambia river and do a spot of fishing...
Make sure you take all the essential items with you that you need...medicine,camera batteries,etc///and do not rely on your credit cards as there is limited opportunites to use them.
I wouldn't recommend a holiday to the Gambia, unless you are a keen nature lover, but having said that, I love it and go over there every to help out with some projects. It isn't what you would call very scenic, apart from the coastal strips but it's one of those places where you will either love or hate. 'Going native' was the way I approached my first visit and I have never looked back since.!
P.S...Fags are £7.00 for 200, Beer is >40p, Petrol £3.00 a gallon, Boat trip £10.00(Book at the port not at the hotels) Nature Reserve £5.00.
Holiday spends for two people ..approx £500...and you can live like a king...
Jeep hire...£150....The roads are appalling outside the main tourist regions..so you'll need one. Taxis are dirt cheap and will sit around and wait for you all day for £10.00...
Enjoy...!!

No was the Kairaba I stayed in not the same as you
Agree about the roads- very poor and very dangerous if it rains. One thing I do remember is the most annoying Scouse family I've ever seen and that's saying something. Obviously not an expensive holiday spending wise although 1 or 2 expensive but poor quality restaurants
Banjul is the capital I remember- was a huge market there but you stick out like a sore thumb and got very irritating.

You might be lucky and they could well have the South African SuperSport 2 channel - just like for SS2 at the bottom of the screen. This channel shows all the Sky covered championship games.
I'd actually be surprised if they don't have it!
