I lived in Buxton until I was 11 and we moved to Stoke in 1982. First memory of Stoke City and what got me supporting them was seeing them on tv drawing 4-4 with Luton at the Vic when Foxy got sent off. My first game was in April 1984 vs Liverpool. Stoke won 2-0 against the legendary Liverpool side (Rush, Dalglish, Souness, Hansen etc) that had already clinched the title and went on to win the European Cup. Scorers for Stoke were iirc...Ian Painter and some guy we had on loan Colin Russell.
A mate and I stood roughly in the middle of the Boothen End and the surge from each goal was like nothing I'd ever experienced..well not in Buxton anyway ;D As were the hundreds of fans engaging in running fights all the way down past the station
Cracking topic. My first game was Jan 89 FA Cup against Barsnley, we drew 3-3 which I believe was a cracking match. I can't really remember it to be honest as I was only six at the time. I made my return the following season and went most of the home games, including my first away game at Vale Park. Even though we got relegated I was hooked and have had a season ticket ever since, (90/91).
vs Coventry when they were on their way to the Cup in '87. Dominated the game but were robbed of glory by little Micky Gynn. Heartbreaking. Clearly remember Brian Kilcline's big mop of curly blonde hair flopping all over the Vic...
Don't think this was my very first game but it was the first that I've got real vivid memories of, and probably the first that really got me hooked.
My first actual Stoke match, as such, was the '72 League Cup final; my uncle got two tickets because he knew his 'strange' nephew had taken to supporting Stoke.
My first trip to the Victoria Ground was a postponed (Butler Street roof had blown off) FAC 3r replay against Tottenham, 24 January 1979.
Stoke won 2-1, I'd never been so cold in my whole life, I stood on the open Stoke End because I thought it was the 'Stoke end', watched carnage in the Boothen, watched Spurs get run through the grave yard in Stoke, had to travel home on a Spurs 'special' with my red 'n' white scarf hidden surrounded by very disgruntled Spurs fans one of whom kept shouting "Run by Stoke? I can't faaacking believe it! Run by Stoke?"
Still have the red, leather wrist band with Stoke City on it I bought from the 'club shop'!
6yr old sat on the wall in the old Stoke end 69/70 season 2-2 draw with the Shit To be honest i had got on to me dad to take me see Charlton, Best, Morgan, Crerand etc ??? Looking up to see the owd man having a MENTAL when Stoke drew level and how much it meant to him , and still does at 73yr old, was the moment my loyalties were decided for life It sure has not been easy - but your club is your club for life ,and i had given up ever seeing us in the top flight again . THANK YOU PETER n TONE Oh and Thanks Dad for passing the STOKE CITY gene on
Was either Wolves or Everton at home and Banks was in goal, I was very little indeed. I was put over the wall onto the track in front or the Boothen Paddock and only really remember the Boothen end clapping Banks as he approached them.
