Mark Lawrenson's words on describing the penalty given by Rob Styles for Brum against Man City, on MOTD. (true to form, obviously this was to 'even things up' after he'd sent a player off from the other team) Styles shouldn't be put in charge of a lollipop at a school crossing!

Rob Styles has been a poor referee for a long time, it didn’t happen over a short period and yet he still has licence to cause even more chaos and mayhem wherever he goes. The football authorities demand better behaviour from players towards officials and say they are doing the best they can under demanding circumstances, well if they continue to allow officials like Styles to referee league games they are creating conditions in which even the most even tempered player will be driven to behave insanely.
There is supposed to be a demotion system if referees perform poorly, that in itself is a joke, if you perform abysmally in your work place you get sacked not demoted. Why should he be allowed to make the same mistakes at a lower level. It’s a little like finding out the local priest is abusing children and then moving him to some backwater part of the world he’ll still be molesting children but it will be somewhere not so high profile.
I am sorry Rob Styles and a few more like him need to realize that there’s only one punishment for appalling refereeing and that’s removal from the lists at all levels of the game, a bad referee is a bad referee whether he is doing it in the Premiership or a Sunday morning in some park.

It was a bit soft granted but if that had happened outside the penalty area and a free kick given no-one would have batted an eyelid. It was not shoulder to shoulder rather a barge in the back.
As I said a bit soft but definitely a penalty IMHO.

Bollocks TQ. McSheffrey was the man doing the barging, so how can he be rewarded for that with a penalty?

As long as he isn't demoted to the championship as often seems to be the case if refs make mistakes

Why should we have to suffer him? The rules are the same wherever you are, if you can't apply them in one place you can't apply them in another.

tq- you can only be talking about the Man City penalty surely? - if you really mean the Birmingham one then it's time to go to Specsavers!!! McSheffrey jumped across the path of Sun Jihai and jumped at HIM. Have you ever played the game?

Just shows how opinions about what happened can vary and Styles has a second or two to consider his decision not numerous replays from different angles. IMHO McSheffrey nipped in front of Sun Ji Hi and was then barged in the back. It wasn't a goal scoring opportunity because if anything they were going away from goal, therefore, not a sending off but a foul in the penalty area. I am talking about the penalty for Brum which is the subject of this thread as introduced by Y o Y.

The thing about your opinion, TQ, is that it totally ignores what actually happened. Seriously, watch it again. He doesn't so much "nip in front" as just barge right into him.

I didn't know til they mentioned it on Sky today that Styles was the ref who gave the dodgy penalty to Chelsea when they played at Anfield earlier this season. If any of us at work made mistakes that big at work we'd be sacked. What a tosser.

Lurcherman,
IMHO it was not shoulder to shoulder, therefore there is a fundamental difference between us on the incident. Rob styles only has a few seconds to make his decision which IMHO was correct.

Rob Styles is still being rewarded for his services to the FA when he made sure Stoke and Millwall didn't play each other in a play-off final. There can be no other earthly reason why this incompetant buffoon is still on the list. He was promoted to ref in The Prem the following season.
The 'shoulder charge' penalty was the one of the worst penno decisions I've ever seen too.
OS.

This whole Respect to Referees (or whatever it's called) initiative has a hollow ring to it when you've got morons like Styles giving decisions like that.
Does the FA really expect players and managers to just shrug their shoulders when this bloke is on the loose and making decisions like that?
