We've all had players in teams we've loved but never got the recognition that they've probably deserved. Who are they?
My absolute favourite had to be John Butler.
Thought the guy was an absolute legend myself, especially that "Stanley Matthews" esque run down the wing against the Vale.
John butler I salute you.
Anyone else had players who they loved but could not explain it?

Leigh Palin Only made 19 appearances for us but I remember the 30 yard deflected goal vs. Port Vale and he punched Alan Ball (rapid exit after that) Still<3 him... (OK 30 yards may be an exagerration but it's how I choose to remember it )

I was always a big Bjarni fan - although he was a genuine Marmite player. Some people used to fly into rages at the mere mention of his name. "Bjarni, Bjarni, Bjarni, Bjarni"

Got to admit fuller, I was a massive Bjarni fan! I even went on praise and grumble once because I was sick of the stick he was getting!

Eric Skeels for me. Great servant to the club and never let us down in his record number of appearances. Eric Skeels is hardly unsung. H At the time he was pretty unsung. The Stokies loved him but most fans of other clubs probably hadn't heard of him. Even at Stoke he was very much the one whose name was not in the papers when so many of the other players got hundreds of column inches about them. Mahoney, as standbutler says, was also pretty unsung compared to most of that Stoke side. And Jackie Marsh was perhaps the third of the 'unsung triumverate". In fact Jackie Marsh probably got more publicity because he was one of the few players to play in contact lenses. I was chuffed to bits when I was working in London to see Jackie's picture in a Chemists Shop window advertising contact lenses.

Alan Dodd John Mahoney Alan Bloor Jimmy Robertson
were all very good players who never seemed to get that much recognition, though Josh played for Wales many times. Though they were different times. Pre-celebrity period. Think if Alan Dodd was playing today he would be a regular in the England team.

I also liked Bjarni, time for Bjarniites to come out of the closed.
I remember one occasion where he had the ball and initially seemed unsure what to do, so he decided to aim at goal (the shot was at a difficult angle) and only missed scoring by centimeteres

Eric Skeels for me. Great servant to the club and never let us down in his record number of appearances. I've just read an aricle about Eric Skeels in the Stoke Coventry programme (72) talking about his clothes shop he'd just opened. He is one of a very rare breed in that he wore every single outfield shirt during his time at Stoke. He's one of the players from my first era of being a Stoke fan. My favourite 'non glam' player from that era was Alan 'Bluto' Bloor I'm not sure why but I always liked him alongside Greenhoff and Smith (and later Hudson)
