It was no coincidence that when he was substituted we looked a miles better team. He shouldn't be anywhere near the squad never mind the starting eleven.

I agree, anyone who thinks salif played well yesterday must have been watching a different game to me, toss distrubution of the ball, mistiming tackles, backing off and ending up in the centre half position, same old salif.

I thought he did alright yesterday personally and he wasn't too bad against Fulham in midweek either. He got a few challenges in, won a few headers and played a few simple balls and did what was needed of him. Hardly a masterclass but he did what was expected of him. I agree he shouldn't be starting for the first team (we've got better players in the form of Wilson) but a lot of the criticism he gets is abit unfair in my view.

Caroll never got a look in during the first half but was certainly more of a danger in the second half. The reason? Salif Diao, simple really

I thought he played well again; backed off a little bit too much but did his defensive duties well.

Fantastic might be a bit over the top but he did a decent job. He was certainly by far the better of the two central midfielders in the first half - I thought Whelan was poor which was disappointing after a good display in the second half against Fulham on Tuesday.

Did ok yesterday, but certainly wouldn't put him in the "master class" bracket!!!

Salif did ok, but he isn't the way to go for us to improve! Salif is a deep holding midfielder and nothing else. Against teams like Newcastle we need to attack and they will be there for the taking as you clearly could see in the second half. The introduction of Ric and Rory was the key to our win yesterday!

He did the one thing he is good at..........unsettling the opposition midfield. Didn't do bad at all as opposed to Whelan who did his usual vanishing trick.

Salif has not played consistently well since his first 6 month loan spell with us back in the Championship. The fact he is still here and getting game time in the Premier League is astonishing.

I think this thread is a fabulous example of how peoples opinions of players and how they perform can be polar opposites even though they have watched the same match. Thus, we will never get 100% of people agreeing 100% of the time, and I think that is the way it has to be.

Salif is on a hiding to nothing with some on here. He was brought in to do a specific job, and he did that job - he outjumped Carroll on a couple of crucial occasions when crosses came in, he shielded the back four and picked up Nolan coming from deep, intercepted passes, broke up play and laid off a simple ball to colleagues. That is what he does, and he does do it effectively on most occasions.
He should, if played, be the holding player of a central midfield three away from home as he will not offer much going forward (Pompey away last season excepted!!). I thought that was what Tone was going to do yesterday, have Glenn and Deano ahead of him and Jonny and Ethers wide of KJ. That is a system worth trying IMHO, although I would have Wilson and Delap in front of Salif in the middle and JP, when fit again, on the right instead of Jonny W.
Whelan was Mr Invisible again yesterday, and deserves any stick he gets as a result, and Wilko once again showed he is not up to life in the Premiership. We have a real probem at right back as Huth should not be played there ever again. Can Deano or Rory do a job there until January?
