I think you've actually got to try it before your qualified to pass an opinion.
It is an incredibly difficult task I found, you can only give what you see (many forget that) and the key to it is, your own positioning on the pitch.
The ultimate compliment I found when doing it for kids up to 14 was that, if the game had run smoothly and, nobody noticed you were on the pitch - you'd generally had a good game.
As for Rob Styles, remember, we'd have definitely lost the auto windscreen shields final if it wasn't for him missing two stonewall penalties for Bristol city - (watch it if you don't believe me) again, many stokies calling Styles 'not fit to burn' conveniently forget that juicy little fact.
(I still think he's a Burk too mind !)
The game is super fast now and they need all the help they can get - players and supporters must also realise they will get it wrong from time to time - its a human element and part of the game, sometimes though they are indeed hopeless and when they are - they must be called to account - I'm not so sure they are though.

anther trick I learned early on was: if you had unfair criticsm off the line from a certain individual, just walk up to him -stand square in the face and offer him the whistle
99/ 100 would visibly shit themselves at the offer to take it on

I think the reason Ref,s are getting it wrong so often is the players are totaly dishonest. Games on TV show most players are cheats, even for throwins players for each side stick an arm up claiming it's their throw, I must be getting old, I remember when a player was awarded a penalty, now they WIN a penalty and quite often by diving. This is now exceptable behavior and they don't seem to care if they're proved to be cheats on TV replays. The large amounts of money in the game is encouraging this behavior. The ref has to judge not only what he has seen but if what he has seen is genuine.

Well said Paddy. What could help to get rid of cheating in the game would be; if the 'pundits' could actually tell the truth too. How often do you hear the likes of Andy Gray et al doing everything they can to make excuses for certain players behaviour? In fairness the Ref's have got a hard job to do, but they don't help themselves with their own shortfalls regarding continuity. You know things such as Ashley Cole should have been sent off but wasn't where as Mascheraino (spelling) was sent off merely for asking a question.

I'm one of those who support referees. They have a thankless task, made even more difficult by frame-by-frame exposure of their mistakes. I have the greatest respect for 95% of them but the other 5% are, IMHO, either bent as a nine bob note or simple egoists who think the game revolves around them. The old adage that the best refs are the ones you don't see is absolutely true.
Let's not stereotype them.
OS.

Blackjet, I know what you mean about Andy Grey. Have you noticed after 2 players have gone for a ball and one player sticks out his arm and pushes the other, there are two outcomes, 1, he's pushed him of the ball defo a foul, 2 Man-ure player, he's just used his upper body strength, nothing wrong with that. What a tit he is.

Football has become a dishonest game. Just look at Sears for West ham. Only his 2nd game and he was diving!!!! Referees have become the easy target for too many people. When they apply the letter of the law they are seen as being harsh, when they don't and use common sense then they're wank & inconsistent. If you listened to the watford vs stoke commentary the ref got absolutley slated for sending off Eustace yet replays show it was a high & dangerous tackle. If you watch the replay of Griffs red card the QPR player comes in then goes over like he's been taking out big time & his team mates are screaming at the Ref, that for me is what made the ref send him off but i've seen no slating of QPR players. Thats the problem, Players cheat the ref and we blame the ref for not spotting it.
