lLooking at some of Roots videos got me thinking how may teams brought following of 10,000 or more.. I remember Sunderland and man City bringing thousands in the cup. Villa when they got promoted brought thousands with baloons think ray Graydon scored for them. United game early 70s the Stoke end was rammed packed with them. Liverpool when we beat them 2-0 again massed on the Stoke end. Strange really becuase some teams brought naff all,Derby,Leicester,Burnley, sheff U, Newcastle and Boro to name a few.More Stoke fans on the Stoke end most weeks and the kids pen ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/800541/images/0m0lbCuTEBzaRn6f8QaM.gif)

Sunderland- 15,000, Man city 12,000 for the 1-0 win(someone said they brought nearly 20,000 for a midweek game in the very early 70s)....Villa 11,000 estimate at the time...the united game -was that 2-2 so many in the stoke end i dont know what happened that day as i couldnt see anything!- Liverpool 16,000 plus...a rough rule of thumb- we only ever turned out a maximum of 30,000 the rest was usually away fans

Durbans 2-2 that was the one i was in the Boothen paddock. Stoke End was just a swaying mass of shit fans.
Funny my dad always took me on the Stoke end where the awy fans were.weird against teams like Everton and chelsea. He said there was to much trouble on the Boothen, never quite got my head round that.

biggest gates I've been on at the the Vic in the 70's were the easter game against Liverpool 46,000 or literally just short of it.., and the FA cup reply against the mancs 70/1 just over 49000
Suderland in the cup there was 41,000 on..from memory the team or the fans never really got going.
Though great as they were , lets not get too carried away ,those type of gates were the exception

I remember some fans just running across the pitch and jumping straight into the boothen !!!!! Weird. That was Man Citeh, before the game had even kicked off they ran down the full length of the pitch before 'invading' the Boothen. About 76-77 ish I'd guess.

Man city were in the boothen end that match in numbers, they were escorted back to the Stoke end along the side of the pitch, they then beckoned the rest in the away end to join them in attacking the boothen. Got as far as the 18 yard box then most thought better of it.Unlike Stoke fans at mansfield and Oldham late 70s.

Yes indeed - fair play to those Spurs lads - I can still see them in my minds eye today ! One thing I found odd reading Mark Chesters book was how he wrote about Stoke getting run against Arsenal in the early 70's as though a game with Arsenal was some kind of occasion to stand up and be counted. My memory was always that if you were going to get trouble from London clubs (apart from Millwall of course who weren't in our division) it would mostly come from Spurs and West Ham. In fact for the size of club that Aresnal were I can barely remember them bringing any fans of any kind to the Vic. You could never say the same of Spurs and West Ham.

Gods- my recollection also- you could bet your last pound on West Ham and Spurs to show in the Boothen, the Arse and Chelsea never turned up to watch the match in Stoke on trent

I remember Man City running across the pitch towards the Boothen, it was way before kick about 2.20. loads ran across, some came into the Boothen but were quickly despatched, seeing what was happening to those who made it the rest stopped in our 18 yard box calling for the rest of their mob to join them, which they didn't. As more Stokies were entering the Boothen all the time, the Mancs quickly lost their window of opportunity.

I too started following stoke from the stoke end aged about 9 - i was told that you had to be a " big boy " before you went on the boothen because it could be rough in there. I couldnt wait to find out - looking back i would have been safer in the boothen! Kevkj did the stoke and brum fan lay their scarfs down before geting stuck in or was that other game? I too always remember spurs on the boothen regular- wolves too ? Remember shit fans everywhere about '73 - and only ones i can recall taking boothen around that time ? Sunderland in cup was loudest i ever heard away fans on the old open stoke end.

I think he just wanted to emphasise how Stoke evolved from being an avergae firm to a great firm in the early 70s.
