Christ, someone asks a hypothetical question to get some discussion going and half the responses are along the lines of "stupid question". Yet, there's hundreds of pants posts along the lines of "what about Zinedine Zidane? Must be worth a punt!" and people just eat it up ;D I remember when we topped Division 3 (to give it its real name) - it was fun to win game after game. The atmosphere was great. But I think some/many of us who remembered the 70s (only vaguely in my case!) really knew deep down that it was still pretty crap to be celebrating winning Div 3! But as years passed, I really came to believe we'd never make it to the glamorous Premier League. Now we're there, I'd like to stay! I think some of the people who express outrage at the very thought of being relegated are the same people who expect us to be challenging for the title by now and want us to sign "big names" to show we're now a "big team". But I prefer Pulis and Coate's (apparent) strategy of taking it slowly but trying to make it sustainable. If we sign the big names, break the wage structure, and destroy the team spirit that seems to play a big part in our success, then we may well go down. And all the "big names" will piss off to any other Premier League team that will have them. And we'd be back to square one. There's an Ian Dury line: "all I want for my birthday is another birthday". And in only our third season up, all I want from this season in the Prem is another season in the Prem Go on Stoke!

Relegation would be a fucking disaster!
We won't get relegated anyway. Even with this team.

forsest, leicester, derby and coventry are all big clubs and should be in the premier league in my honest opinion there are only 20 places in the prem, and about 30 "big clubs who should be in the Prem", you do the maths

Its got to happen again one day, just hopefully not in the near future. Also, it doesn't mean we'll "tear up" anyone, in fact it'll probably be the opposite. Tonnes of teams that leave the premiership end up losing more than they win and suffer mid-table or lower finishes! Why does it have to happen? Can you see it happening to the likes of manure etc?

Can you see it happening to the likes of manure etc? Yes, I often dream of them, liverpoo, Arsenil and Cheski getting relegated, these are known as Carlsberg dreams, probably the best dreams in the world (excluding the ones where Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayak and Umma Thurman have a naked mud wrestle to see which one gets me first)

I like the Championship and think it's a good league with decent teams with a high majority on an even playing field. That said what's the point of settling for second best. I'd be very interested to see how we'd spend if we got relegatated whether we went for it or tried to consolidate. I think our spending would be suited more to the championship as is TP's skills which I don't mean in a negative way he's just better getting the max out of limited ability. With what I heard on Breakfast news though I think if we can hang on in the Premiership for another year or so we could be in a very strong position where others could be in deep shit.

I know I am in a minority but I'm coming round to the feeling that a Premier League II would not be such a bad idea. Getting relegated ought not to produce the panic that relegation from the Premier League does.
The Premier League choose to "soften the blow" with parachute payments but this has two bad effects: 1. It produces a ridiculously uneven playing field in the Championship and 2. It stops some clubs doing what would be sensible - ie insisting on relegation clauses in their contracts.
I'd pay the current Prem clubs a little less than they get now and I'd add the money saved to the parachute payment money and pay that to what is currently the Championship. And I'd insist that all player contracts in what would now be Prem I and Prem II, contained relegation contingency clauses meaning that relegation would not break the bank for any club.
Unlike the propsal last year I'd stick with normal promotion and relegation between Prem II and Div 1 - although I might work towards a smaller Prem II than the current Championship.
EDIT: Ideally I'd have a wage cap as well but this would need FIFA support. But a max wage in Prem I and a rather lower one in Prem II would be sensible

Oh my god relegation, in 1985 I thought ahh not to worry we will be back in 2 years, hmmm then I was 23 and ironically 23 years later we did get promotion and I was now 46. What happened in those 23 years was 90% of the time crap.
Yes it was great a couple of Autoglass trophies winning Div 2(really 3) and the play offs and wow wasnt 1995-96 excellent, but compare that to being in the premiership , well you just cannot. I dont want to go back to a cold wet windy evening at Chesterfield and Hoekstra scoring a 90th minute winner, I was soaked pissed off and wondering why am I doing this shit, well its a love hate thing but relegation is the hate thing.
At 23 I was full of optimism, now I am 48 and like Stoke hoping to stay up (thank fuck for viagra), going down dont bare thinking about

It is not a stupid or pointless thread because unless we get some decent quality signings it will be a very realistic possibility. Great as it was to stay up last season I feel the signs are there. At times the "football" was dire. Do I want Stoke to stay in the Premiership,of course I do (yes I am a season ticket holder) Do I want to see Stoke in the premiership in 10 years time performing the same way. No.

I never want us to get relegated again. After being out of the top league for so long and putting up with years of mediocrity why on earth would anyone contemplate asking "would relegation be all that bad?"
If it happens at some stage in the future then we will have to deal with it but right now we should looking forward with optimism to a new season and hopefully many more in the top league.
Cheers

Playing Devils advocate here but If we got relegated we'd get to tear up the division beating old foes like Forest Derby Cardiff Leicester Coventry Burnley Preston What do you reckon? wow, i have read some strange stuff on here before, but this one takes the cake !! being relegated would be OK just so we can play the likes Derby, Preston, Coventry etc ?? complete bollocks !!

yes it would be a bad thing. for starters think of the revenue we would lost on the gates, because i garuntee that we wouldn't be selling over 20,000 season tickets in the championship. would you rather go out on a away trip to the likes of man utd, arsenal, man city and everton or preston, coventry and derby? some people talk some garbage on here!

Relegation is a kick on the cock financially.. but its a useful tool for weeding out the mercenaries, they quickly expose themselves and jump ship, leaving the good guys behind..
Otherwise relegation aint so bad..
No Mark Lawrenson No getting bumRaped week in week out No sky high admission at shite grounds like Goodison/Anfield No biased referees No extortionate wages to average players No face paint No foam hands No bandwaggoners No stupid or inconvenient kick-off times No away fans pissing themselves when attendance is announced No BROWN Phil making a cunt of himself of national telly

This post is even more stupid than your transfer rumours Good point. We wouldn't 'tear up' the division at all and if we did come back up we'd be back to square one and have to start building again for the Prem. Utterly stupid post.

We wouldn't tear up league one never mind the champ. Tin hat time but our football is simply not that good. We were quite lucky to get promoted despite some dire performances god only knows when or if we'd get that lucky again.
