From Matty's interview
“I’m not asking for the world, I just want to be on a par level with the top earners at the club,” he said, “but for some reason, they (the club) don’t want to do that.
If that is true, this is a disgrace. He is one of our best players and the winger we have been crying out for, for a long time.
Why the hell would we not reward the player of the year with parity of the top earners. Apart from Ric, Ryan and Huth I cant think of another more deserving top earner.
Lose him in the summer and I will be bloody fuming

he certainly deserves it ...would be a disgrace if we lose him for the sake of a few quid more

We'd be stumped without his contribution this (and last) season.
Get the fucking contract out Stoke.

Even more infuriating, as his goal has probably won us another £2M, as a timely reminder.

Meant to say that of course we don't know exactly what his agent wants, apart from a rise, in the contract. Perhaps for his club to pay any futurt gambling debts?

He's got TWO years left though. It's a little bit of a piss take looking for a wage bump and extension less than 18 months into a 3 and a half year deal.
And didn't Pulis admit that we effectively leave a bit of padding in the wage budget so we can give strikers "special" wages, which are slightly advanced on the top whack for the rest of the squad?
Do we think he's probably on 20-25? And is looking for parity with Beattie and Tuncay at 35-40?
I can see why he wants to do it, especially at 29 and eager to pay off some more of his debts.
But, from our point of view, he's contracted 'til he's 31, so what's the rush - apart from keeping a player that's going to start getting a bit agitated and arsey about it onside?

FM - whilst I agree with you in theory - and nowt against Matty here. His agent MAY just get the hump on this one and make some noises elsewhere and we could then have a load of speculation. TP himself stated he wanted it sorted. At the end of the day any footballer will want the best deal. Frankly Matty deserves parity, even though the wages are crazy for the top earners, but that is market forces Just do not want his agent pissing in his ear all summer on this. It would appear that he is not asking for the world (well maybe he is compared to you and I). It is a story that wont go away and if we were signing him from somewhere else, I doubt we would baulk at the wages now, based on his form yes we could argue TP took him when he was down and turned him around, but that is not how footballers and more importantly their bloody agents think - money. Finally, it is not as though it will smash our wage structure

Sorry, but I have to disagree with people on this one. Matty is barely half way thro an AGREED contract to do exactly what he should be doing, playing his heart out and doing it well. The problem with this is the Club ends up in a wage spiral, and look what happens when that occurs (see thread on West Ham). And would the Club have the ability to negotiate his wages downwards if his effort tails off - I don't think so! We are still a relatively small but growing Club and we have to grow the finance (oh, and when we try and do that by a good deal with Adidas the Club get all sorts of short sighted criticism like don't buy the new shirts!!). The most important thing is to maintain or improve the fantastic progress over the last couple of years which has been nothing short of unbelievable. There may be some room for manoeuvre with Matty but the more he plays it out in public the more I am inclined to say 'you've signed a contract so fulfil it'!

I agree with FM and eeebygum. He's got two bloody years left. Really don't see what the panic is.

Speculation suggests that Stoke are not unwilling to increase his wages. From what has been suggested in the press in the past Stoke want to essentially pay the same to him directly and any increase will be directed to paying off his debts
i.e.
If he gets £25k now, he will still get the same every week and any difference sent directly to pay off his debts
