Whilst browsing on here a few minutes ago my computer was attacked by 'http Malware Alarm' trying to install virus scanners and anti spyware software as apparently I have alot of corrupt files. It's from the website performanceoptimizer.com and I was wondering if anyone else has had it? Fortunatley my own anti-virus software blocked the attempted intrusions.
Without being a total computer boffin I think it's fair to say to people do not to install it, perhaps it's targetting this site becuase it has access to people's IP addresses after they've posted?

Think it's a scam. There are some supposed virus scanners which find files that aren't there and then attempt to sell you a download to cure it. Some of which don't work at all.

(If you have a PC that is up to date Windows Update ... or the linux/mac equivalent. AND you have an up to date Firewall AND you have an up to date Anti-Virus product - THEN you should be OK ... without the stuff below ... though I would still consider it if I were you) It's from the banner ads served at the top of the page. there is little this site can do (other than report to the company the site is "rented" from - probably rented for free?). There is a lot of this at the minute ... not just from this site ... it is the latest attack-vector (something SCFC could do with!). If you are using FIREFOX then download and run the "No Script Plugin" (available from the firefox websiteIf you are using Internet-Explorer then you should set "ActiveX Controls" and "Scripts" to PROMPT (or to disabled) in Tools-Options-Advanced (from IE's menu bar - There is a tutorial from MS hereNOTE: Both things listed above will stop some websites working. However, better that than getting infected. In essence, no site is safe anymore, if it runs content - especially banner adverts - from a third-party site, then it may try and give you an infection. Let's be careful out there. (more info El Reg) ah
