My First Team Squad Analysis , season so far.
Here goes ;
Simonsen and the defense as a whole.
Simo Top shotstopper, one of the best in England , but other areas of his game let him down somewhat, or they have this season. Failure to command his area, or shout "my ball , you fucking cunt" have lost us points this season, however top corner saves have won us many too, he is very hesitant when it comes to crosses, throw ins etc, and he doesn't really know what to do.
However, i would like to see Simo behind a back four including Dickinson and Riggott in it... I didn't attend the match yesterday but from what i gather it did seem that Carlo Nash showed good awareness and bossed his area well, he is a big lad, and i for one would think Pulis would stick with him now. My heart is with simmo though, stoke through and through , it's surreal watching a match without him walking up to the boothen... We all know that Cort is not clever with his feet, neither is Shawcross really, he wins more or less every header, and gets vital blocks in, and i do believe his somewhat "unique" style of "score lots with his head" doesn't have much bearing on the goals going in at our end. Dickinson and Wilkinson need to be in and play an active role, at least one of them do, the more likely of the 2 will be Dicko as it seems now as Griff has the armband! Riggott has come in and in the short time he has been at the Brit he looks to have settled in well, apart from that early lapse against Burnley, which i believe was more down to Pugh and Diao's awful hesitation, he has looked solid, which is what we need... Shawcross has obviously been dropped , but we all know what we have here, a big talent who will need nurturing, and perhaps for the promotion run in, we will need experienced players at the heart of the defence, despite this, i'm sure Shawcross will have a big part to play in us getting to the premiership.
Midfield- Lets start with Liam lawrence, the engine room, the player whom if all the other lads out there don't "fancy" it, he's the one who will grab the game by it's bollocks. He has a 3rd lung to quote the sentinel, and a lot of quality to back it up. 14 goals from midfield say it all really, the player of the season award is more or less nailed on if he keeps putting the work in which he has been....
Delap- the success story, how many names was he called at the start, i think the best was "Decrap", he's the opposite now though, box to box, mr .cool and just what you need when you have a player like whelan who snaps into tackles and creates. That throw is a bit of a bonus too i suppose..... But i'll let Peter Beagrie jizz over them for the time being....
Whelan- Has been super since his switch from Wednesday, disappointing performance against QPR, although who can blame him when playing with that joker Diao(pass , stand still, pass stand still) . Anyway, back to Whelan, he will be a crowd favourite, again like Lawrence, he has the work ethic, but he also has the quality to back it up, a great mix to have. Whelan and Delap all the way, in an ideal world you would have Pugh as back up for them...
Moving on to gallagher and Cresswell, two totally different players, but both do a very good job, Cresswell helping the defence out while supporting the attack( imo he has done a great job this season and deserves a big pat on the back) and Gallagher , good skill on the ball , but i think he can go missing in "scraps", nevertheless he's proved what he can do before, in a far inferior team, so perhaps a chance would be greatly appreciated by the man , Tone??
Fuller is obviously the talisman of the team, not necassarily THE best player in the team, but he certainly has a massive effect psycologically on the whole team, he came on yesterday, and lifted them. While his dazzling runs are fantastic to watch, it's clear he needs to pass more, something which i believe he will start to do after his recent kick up the backside.
Sidibe is a battering ram, plain and simple, he beats the opposition up, so Ricardo fuller, Lawrence and co can pick up the pieces and punish them, and it works. He may not be the most technically gifted player, or even a striker at that! But what he brings to the team is something totally unique, he is beyond critisicm, he works his socks off every single day, and his ablility is very limited, yes mama is "shit", but he fucking makes up for it when he elbows a defenders face in when the referee's aren't looking... As a defender, if there is one player you don't want to come up against, it is mama sidibe. Football is a team game, and he contributes to it, maybe not by scoring goals frequently , but by kicking the shit out the opponents so that other players have space....
This time last year, we were hovering around the playoffs, praying that we might be given a chance to be one of the four teams who had realistic prospects of going up via Wembley.
Now, we are in the top 2, with 8 games to go, 8 "cup finals" ,to quote Tone. Despite this I don't feel as nervous as i did last year(apart from the last 5 minutes of the game when i am bricking it), i hold the tears back every time we score and yesterday night was another massive omen , 1-0 away at norwich . We played average, they had shots raining in on our goal, 5 minutes of additional time, cureton missing open goals....
Last year the Burnley game on saturday would've been 1-0 nailed on to the clarets, but Kiraly's back saved us. , Wolves away, blackpool away, scunthorpe away and at home(just off the top of my head) present me with scenarios that , in normal circumstances, in NORMAL SEASONS, we would've laid down and lost.
It is what promotion teams do. They have the endevour to win games and push 'arder than the team they are facing. If we don't get promoted this season, then the team will come back stronger next season, Tone has built a very good squad this season, all on permanent contracts, and considering that most have only just joined this season, the team spirit can only get better and better....
We are one step closer to our dream. Look at our home fixtures now, if we make an atmosphere like we have so often , we will get the points required.
And we will reach the promised land.....
Fantastic time to be a stoke supporter..
