I too remember JF with great affection, thought he was a fantastic keeper and we should have played him instead of buying Shilts who seemed to have bigger priorities like getting his hair permed at Bellfields in Stoke. If any of you have ever read Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby he accredits a penalty save to Gordon Banks at Highbury where we lost 1-0 when it was John Farmer who saved it. Like many others on this thread I also went to WCGS, Ken Williams made Abdy look like Danny La Rue

Yes, Watts taught chemistry and lives(d) in Dartmouth Ave Westlands and Quincey Latin. I remember Quincey slapping a classmate across the face for chewing gum, reckon he would be sent down now.

Stokienorthants, I reckon nearly every one of the teachers there would be doing porridge nowadays...how times have changed eh ha ha. Quincy was a world of his own at throwing that board rubber,if only it was an olympic sport ha ha

I was also at Wolstanton Grammar at the same time as JF, surprising thing is he never played footie for the school because in those days it was purely a rugby playing school.

Addition to my post above, remember Nev the woodwork teacher, after you had been a bad lad he would say " half an hours purgatory or 30 seconds pain boy, your choice"
He meant a 30 minute detention or you had to run from one end of the woodwork room to the other while all in there chucked bits of wood at you !!
Imagine that hapenning now, he would be in the slammer.

Lets get a Wolstanton Grammar thing up on Facebook and we can discuss all our stories on there and leave the original thread to that fine goalie called John Farmer. I didnt know we had that many Stoke fans there, when I was there they were mostly Fail fans, the Stokies went Wakkies

Could make some brilliant saves and then drop a clanger, that's why he wasn't rated that much.

Contrary to popular belief, John Farmer wasn't actually a farmer.

Always chuckle now at the first 2 players on team list in sentinul in them days when Calvin Palmer ocassionally played full back.....Farmer, Palmer............
Actually, come to think of it, Palmer was a real utlility player for us playing in just about every position except goalie. Waddo even experimented with him at centre forward when he was struggling to replace Big John after his transfer to sheff wed.

Bump Mountain, Nev Callear, Sprayer Morris, Hayton, Bedding, Wagner, Burgess (who had a scrap with a 6th former in history lesson), Miss Sealy, Fifi (french teacher) Dusty Rhodes, Knocker White anybody remember Killer Morris who got hit by iron shot put by a Dunkley pupil during sports day. Who was the puffy camp art teacher always wore a dicky bow? Also remember Charlie Watts and Quincey.Watts used to say "V might=IR boy, but don't you ever forget P1 V1 over T1 = P2 V2 over T2" in reference to his favouritism of chemistry over physics. My favourite teacher was Alfie Fenna followed closely by Abdul Rowe who was an ace maths teacher. Whos going start this facebook thingy then?

I saw JF play quite a few times. I always rated him, but I was only a kid at the time and anyone in a Stoke shirt was a demigod back then!
He was in goal when we stuffed Arsenal 5-0! ;D

I remember him being a good understudy to Gordon Banks and , to my recollection never let us down when he got his chance
A good solid goalkeeper at the top level of the game in his time too !
cant say fairer than that !

The art teacher was (Phil?) Holder. It's great to be reminded of some of these teachers after all this time. Abdul Rowe was great - I remember one day some kid pinned a note to the back of his gown (they all wore them back then, of course) saying 'I'm no Fakir'. Everyone was pissing themselves as a he walked along the corridor, but he didn't know what was going on. Happy days!

JF was a very very good goalkeeper, and should certainly have made more of his career IMO
Played cricket at Leek with his brother Derek (the policeman) who opened the batting, and can vaguely remember John playing a couple of times (think they were in friendlies)

My very very first ever stoke game had John Farmer in goal cos Gordon Banks was injured. He kept a clean sheet which was more than Bob Wilson did cos we murdered them 5-0.
John Farmer was one hell of a keeper who was very unlucky to be behind the greatest keeper in the world. Arguabley the strongest goalkeeper pairing at any club, ever, was Banks n Farmer.

I seem to remember him writing poetry at one time I've seen the name John Farmer in some poetry anthologies. I must admit I thought it was just another guy by the same name. If true that would make him the second former footballer to become a fairly big name in poetry circles. The other was Duncan Forbes, the big centre half at Norwich.

As I recall, John Farmer was a brilliant goalkeeper for a time and then inexplicably he seemed to lose it, letting in several goals that should have been saved. I think Waddington lost patience and signed Banks.

Farmer..England, Farmer..England.
I always felt sorry for John Farmer, to be replaced by Gordon Banks and then Peter Shilton. How unfortunate is that!
