Yes I do remember him-very good keeper. But perhaps you should have posted this on the main board. And I'd be quick because once some of our regular posters realise you're female-well I can't vouch for your safety!

I remember John he went to Wolstanton Grammer. He was a very nervy keeper after he got kicked in the head away against Man City. I was present at his horror show in Kaiserslauten. 4-1 I think.

Methinks we should have played Farmer instead of buying Shilton.

John seemed to have a good future beckoning. He was not helped by the center half in front of him. Maurice Setters was quite often found out on the wing and kicking an attacker who he had a problem with.

If I'm not mistaken, Farmer was the last home grown Stoke first team keeper we ever produced.

Yes, he was very good indeed at the outset winning an England U-23 cap. But, for no obvious reason his confidence went and he never regained it? As for Kaiserslautern Kapitulation, I saw the home game at the VG. Didn't the late John Ritchie hold the German all-comers record for the quickest sending off? 23 seconds wasn't it?

We wasted good money on replacing Farmer when it was not needed.

oh yes... excellent keeper, if my memory serves me correct, we used to sing: "Farmer is better than Yashin..........." That was some compliment as Yashin was a world class keeper.
It was the time I started watching Stoke in the old stoke end players like Dobbin, Dodd, Bloor etc, geat memories

i always felt a bit sorry for JF, second fiddle to the great Gordon Banks followed by being replaced by Shilton. Maybe Waddo didn't have enough faith in him. Now we have Simmo out on loan 'cos we've got Thomas and Begovic. Often the problem with 'keepers, you need at least two good 'uns, and one of them won't be happy!
At least the outfield squad players have a chance, as a sub, or when players get injured, but keepers tend to stay clear, mostly

John Farmer was a better goalkeeper for our style of defence than Shilton and therefore we would have done better not buying Shilton.
Farmer suffered from being understudy to Banks then Shilton. At times, he seemed to let himself go a little and get overweight.
I last spoke to him when he was selling crisps as a rep. He was always a nice chap and readily accepted he could have made more of his career.
All in all, he was very underrated and deserves more recognition.

Went Wolstanton Grammar School same time as JF. He was hero worshipped at school after his first game for Stoke even though we lost at home to arse 3-1. Remember him saving a Jimmy Greaves penalty at home to spurs and also making a stunning save from Bobby Charlton. He also won caps at U-23 level for England.
Most Stoke players from his era say that Waddo should have spent money buying a replacement for Big John Ritchie instead of splashing out on Shilton when JF was more than suitable as Banks replacement. King Denis, in his autobiography says this is the reason we didn't clinch old div 1 championship in 74-75 season.

Yes I also went to Wolstanton Grammar School at the same time as john, he was a year younger, we both played together for the school cricket team. He was a very good fast bowler - well he scared me stiff bowling at me!
Very good goalkeeper who seemed to lose confidence, he went out on loan to Leicester City for a while.

He was also a good basketball player if I remember rightly. Finished as player then manager at Northwich Victoria.

I was also at Wolstanton GS at the same time as JF. I think he was in the year below me and his older brother Derek was in my year. I believe Derek went on to become a high-ranking Police officer. Anyone know what happened to John? I seem to remember him writing poetry at one time and having a daughter who was a useful tennis player. Didn't he live in Florida for a time?

Methinks we should have played Farmer instead of buying Shilton. Definitely. Shilton was far from his best when he played for us ,whereas Farmer had very few poor games . I remember once he saved a shot from Jimmy Greaves that was deflected and he twisted in mid air somehow and pulled off one of the best saves I have ever seen ,Greaves applauded the save and walked up and shook his hand.

Methinks we should have played Farmer instead of buying Shilton. Very astute. Farmer was a great keeper. Shilton was a great keeper too, but as interesting as lettuce. Hey Basher. Hello My name's K4. I am the smart one.

Understudy to Banks and Shilton, maybe, but much better at writing poetry. Or have I got the wrong one?

Farmer became a bit shaky then made an error at Chelsea which turned a win into a draw. That seemed the final straw for Waddo who got Shilton soon after. I agree that if that money had gone on a replacement for Richie it would have been better.

John, Was a superb keeper. At one time easily the best in the country. later seemed to lose confidence. I was hugely sorry we did not persevere with him. Tremendous talent and hope he is still well and enjoying life.

You're way too young, Hamburg! John Farmer would have left school in about 1964/65. I remember KW as well - he was head from about 1960. So where's your dad now, Basher?
