"I think we could have made something competitive, something we could have really identified with and something worth a few quid "
Are you suggesting that the side we currently have isn't?

Our current side is obviously competitive,
I identify most with players who are local or come through the ranks and we don't have many of those - in fact I think we're desperately short of any player who really connects with the majority of fans.
We have few financially appreciating assets in our team - possibly Lawrence and Ryan.
It's a team that has been assembled and managed to do one thing, that's get in the premiership. I support the ends but not the means.

I'd firmly expect us to make a profit on Simmo and Fuller (if forced to), as well as Whelan.
In a perfect world, all clubs would still have substantial connections to the local area on the pitch - but that's not how the game is anymore is it? While I wouldn't want us to be Chelsea and simply buy success, it is nice to see us finally showing a bit of ambition and financial muscle on a par with the big guns of this division.
From the players you mention:
Foster - was a good deal that worked out well for all parties.
Henry - Never impressed me personally, bit of a crab, certainly not a patch on Whelan.
Vass - disappointed we didn't do more to keep him.
Rooney - not really setting the world alight.
Patto - good player, but we couldn't guarantee him first team football so he left. Fair play to him.
