I hate the square, tight design of nets nowadays I used to love the 'stantion' style goals of old (think back to the Vic), where the ball would nestle into the back of the net and the keeper would have to fish the ball out by battling with the net Now they are horrible, Subbuteo type goals that the ball tends to either ping back out of, quite dissatisfying! All teams seem to use these square monstrosities - Bring back retro goal nets! New Style - Poo Old Style - Ace! (Not the best photo though!)

Old ones were brilliant. I used to love it when 25 yard screamers could actually get stuck in the top corner of the net in the metal D shape struts at the top of the posts.
However, there was nothing better seeing a pissed off keeper trying to cajole the ball out...
Or better still a sliding centre-half attempting to clear the ball before it rolls in the net, then seeing him caught in it like a makerel without a hope in hell of getting out of the fishing net! ;D

Use to hate the old ones at west ham...they only had 18 inches between the goal line and the 5,000 skinheads on the terrace behind...so tiny things that would see the ball rebound to the half way line if anyone hit a half decent shot.
Nothing like the sound or sight of the ball hitting quality nets and then dropping down...the finalty of which is what helps makes football what it is

Willfield High, Bentilee in the 1960's had really nice nets and a purfect playing pitch, and a parkey on a motorbike to keep us on our toes!

I agree completely. Half the time these days a goal is scored and the ball spends about 0.5 seconds actually in the goal! It hits the back of the net and then the keeper has to be careful in case the rebound removes his head!
Much prefer to see the ball stay in the goal like in the old days.
Also gave naughty ball boys the chance to kick the ball back out just as the opposition keeper was close to retrieving it which never failed to piss off the keeper and entertain me!

I remember (Mark Hughes?!!) scored a goal at Southampton's Dell. It hit the back of the net and rebounded off the advertising board and 'back into play'. The referee never gave the goal!! I also watched a match at Cheltenham where the ball hit the netting on the inside of the post, broke the net, curled round the post and back into play. Madness- the referee played on!! He must have been D'Urso

Agree about the ones at the Dell, they were ridiculous. If a penalty got hit hard enough someone behind the net would get a smack in the face. I think they eventually had to put a sheet of tracing paper or a motion sensor on the goal line to declare a goal!
And yes a defender caught up in the net like a snare trap is always amusing. Seeing them try to display nonchalance whilst trying to wrestle out of it after they've just catapulted themselves in is funny. ;D

Yes. Scoring in a proper old goal and net was far more aesthetically pleasing.
