Salif Diao is a top footballer and was one of our best players last season
Pulis is desperate to play Diao to get him match fit but it has spectacularly backfired
As it is we are playing with ten men from the start of the game and Tone has to drop Diao and bring in a replacement or risk jeopardizing our promotion bid

Diao did look still very off the pace first half, our holding midfielder isn't holding anything at the moment.

To be honest, if Delap hadnt been suspended, he would have been on the bench. However, with whelan now out for 2 games, he will play the next 2, which will hopefully get him up to speed.

Diao will cost us games while he's getting fit
He has to be dropped now

I would write Diao off for the rest of the season. Any player who misses pre-season or part of it spends months playing catch up because they miss out on putting the basic core fitness into place.
Salif has not only missed pre-season but has arsed around for seven months since last season ended.
I couldn't understand the obsessional desire (Zamoraitis) whilst it was taking place. Once the season had got as far as it did without him signing the contribution Diao would be capable of making became predictable.
Take a look at their second goal today and ask yourself where our central midfield had gone to? The fella who scored had more space than you can find in the Lorne Street Paddock! This is the problem when one of the two is just miles off the pace.

It was staggering the amount of space they had in front of our back four!

Diao had wandered out wide to try and close someone down, leaving a massive hole in the middle for Legertwood to run through. Nobody else seemed to bother picking him up, and I nearly gave myself a coronary yelling at the television as he wandered through completely unmarked. Disgraceful defending from the whole team really. Agree totally with MarkW...Salif is a write off for the rest of this year. Bet he still starts against Burnley though.

Hasn't he got a knee injury? Or was that not right?

Mark, I have to admit I had Zamoraitis ;D about Salif, I was also dishing it out to Rory early in the season and I was totally wrong on both counts. It could have been very different today with Rory playing, he's become that important to us.

Salif was very poor today and he knows it judging by the way he trudged to the bench.
There is something wrong with him, whether its the knee or lack of practice but we cant afford passengers at this stage

Much as I loved Salif's contribution last season and was happy when he returned, as others have said, he is a passenger at present. Central midfield has to be between Delap, Whelan and Pugh (surely his best position?) - end of story.
Salif needs to get his head down in training, get his fitness levels up to speed and be fit and raring to go next season as the Salif Diao of season 2006-2007 would be an asset, whatever division we find ourselves in come August 2008.

There was a comment in the morning press that Leigterwood scored a great goal having left his marker 30 yards adrift... If you are 30 yards away from your opponent then you haven't got a fookin marker!

Him being Leigterwood and then the twat scored.

Salif is just not sharp enough or fit enough and our games are too important right now to just get him up to speed . I would certainly be a lot happier to see Pugh line up alongside Delap on saturday with Dicko playing left back .

As Bobafett said, except switch Griff to the lb position, Wilko to the rb. I thought Pugh was our MoM against Newcastle from central midfield, got a good motor on him. Give him a go there whilst Whelan is out.

There is much to admire about Pulis, but it's apparent he has a blind spot when it comes to our midfield.
Dioa isn't fit, and Cresswell shouldn't be playing wide on the left for a team with genuine aspirations of promotion. If i could find fault at all with Pulis, it would be in our disjointed midfield. We get away with it when we are on top in games, but when opponents are in the ascendancy we struggle desperately.
