Absolutely ran the game today, two outstanding performances. Both players showed great endeavour and athleticism, and no small amount of quality against one of the Prem's top midfield partnerships (no second-string pairing in Fabregas and Denilson!).
Whelan must be allowed to keep his place in the side to partner Whitehead. His ability on the ball is second to none in our squad and he looks the perfect partner for Whitehead on today's evidence.
Well done both!

Well said. Looked very good today, both are good at breaking up the play and can pass the ball well. If we don't get any creative CM's in the window I would be happy to see these two in the middle every week. Well done to both of them and well done Whitehead for his goal!

Whelan and Whitehead were superb today. They'd be my first choice pairing in cental midfield after that display.

Can't drop Rory though so what do we do!! Whelan surprised me how well he did getting back and tackling, he doesn't normally do it so I think Tone got them REALLY up for it today

good point really, play it until it stops working, then substitute to see fit. It'd be unfair on any of the players from Sunday's starting XI to be dropped next time.

sidibe was also key in a 4-4-1-1. He tackled their midfield so often which helped whelan get on the ball and turn defence to attack. God help me if Diao gets a place instead of whelan after that performance .

Whelan's defensive side of his game has come on a hell of a lot in his time with us. His breaking down of play was superb yesterday, and he definately uses the ball better than any of our central players. I do still think we need a central player with a creative pass though, it is still something we should be looking at addressing this window as a priority.

Whitehead is the player most improved all season. what a performance. Whelan needs to play more! and he needs to have a shot more at home!

Whitehead is playing out of his skin at the moment, one of the first names on the team sheet right now for me!
Well played Dean!!
Whelan played well yesterday, as everyone did, but he needs to improve his consistency a little. Hopefully a run in the side would help him do that.

If he's not good enough then we are in trouble, because for me he's our most creative midfield option. Him and Whitehead looked very good together, by far the best option we have at the moment

Oh ahh then mate, then who's the best partner for Whitehead atm?

Ah, so you didn't see him and Whitehead do a job on Fabregas and Denilson then? I'm not sure what else Whelan needs to do to prove himself to some, especially bearing in mind we picked him up for £500k or 1/10th the cost of Whitehead. He works hard, he gets stuck in, he passes intelligently, and he gets the odd goal. Oh, and he takes a decent set-piece too.

Agreed.
It should be that pairing next time out with Lenny on the right but you just know it will be Ethers with DDD’s alongside him (Deano, Diao and Delap) instead.

I think it has been clear they are the best pairing for CM we have... but placing Rory is the problem.

Whelan in my view was the best midfielder stoke had, then whitehead upped his game and has played well ever so consistently!now i wouldnt look beyond whelan and whitehead and build the team around that cm partnering!!WELL DONE BOYS and what a performance all over

A week or 2 ago you were proclaiming he is a League 2 player at best!

Whitehead's performance was excellent, and - for the first time - he looked a genuine Premier League player, and the box-to-box midfielder we were promised. Credit where credit is due, and I hope he continues to put in performances that are just as good.

Whelan has always had that ability IMHO. Delap is the problem because his all-round play shouldn't be getting him in the starting XI. Hopefully the transfer window will shake things up. Once we get over the hang-up of not having the long throw, we might just start creating more from the wings or open play. Rory is knackered and can't take us forward, literally and metaphorically.

I think your praise of Whelan is a little over the top, but I can see where you're coming from. Every player played well on Sunday, Whitehead was excellent and Whelan played a very good part in the middle.
However, I bet the ESPN viewers get treated to a Salif and Whitehead special on Monday night.

Arsenal and Spurs. Not consistant enough? Maybe because he gets dropped every other week. He does his job and how after that performance against Arsenal can you drop him just because you feel earlier on he hasn't been consistant.

I thought Glenn Whelan had a great game on Sunday. This was in the context of an excellent team performance, and maybe Sidibe was the key. His constant hassling of the Arsenal defenders and deep midfielders high up the pitch really made a difference.
Whelan showed tremendous energy to get up the pitch and hunt the ball down. He was making tackles in the final third late in the second half when we were really on top, and starting quick breaks from changes in possession in dangerous positions.
His set piece delivery was mostly superb, and apart from one suicidal short ball back infield on the left edge of his own box, he never put a foot wrong.
The only reason he didn't get a mention in the MOTM ratings earlier in the week was because so many of them played well.
