Did Crooksy play under Waddo? I thought he was the Alan Durban era. He must have been very young if he did.

There was a story that he broke Waddo's office window with a ball and he offered him a trial
My bet is that he popped by to ask Waddo a question- 14 hours later he was still finishing the question so TW gave him a contract in exchange for him sodding off home- just my theory

I've lived 'darn sarf' for years now and whilst I agree with Linx that the accent fades but we remain recognisable to other Stokies you are welcome to slap me if I ever start saying Arfternoon or barth. I've yet to hear a Londoner who speaks with Garth's ..erm.. 'different' :)intonation...mind, I've heard many a North- of -watford type putting it on

Stokief, I agree with you and Linx - I've spent half of my life living south of the M4. I don't have a Stoke accent but just a general Midlands one. No yam yam accent, mind It's not a concious decision, probably like Garth Crooks, but just the way I talk although if I ever met someone from Stoke darn sarf or abroad they could tell straight away I was from this area.

Am I the only one who likes Crooks as a pundit?
Unlike one or two he clearly has passion for the game & is clearly a 100% Stoke fan
OK he is often, very, wrong but his hearts in the right place

Hey Soi - I bet you hate election time over there mate! No good for trade. Election time happened to me a few years ago in BKK when England were playing rugby. I was sat in o'Reilleys on Silom Road watching the egg-chasing with a lemonade in my hand Then the same thing happened to me in Colombia a couple of years later. Do you reckon Garth would do a good job on Star Sports over there?

Sorry to disagree with everyone. Garth is a true Stoke-on-Trent hero imho. From a humble begining to FA cup and EUFA Cup winner, chairman of PFA and awarded OBE for services to footie. Come on Stokies recognise a player and man who has done good ffs. Its little wonder the guy doesn't want fa to do with his heritage if this thread is anything to go by.

*Bolton away in 93 is the exception

Sorry but Crooks and hero don't fit in the same sentence for me- the token black man who makes comments that if roles were reversed would be deemed racist. Sven and David Seaman summed up his ridiculous line of questioning for me Crooks 'David -are you disappointed at losing the title to Man United' Seaman (Rolling his eyes) 'What do you think Garth????' To Sven andhour after England drew to Nigeria 'Well it's confirmed-you're in the second round' Sven's face was a picture When the England team had a media blackout he stalked them with his microphone- yep media blackout but they'll talk to you Garth- you're special (needs)

Refernce to the question earlier, he was at Stoke when the roof blew off the Butler Street stand so he certainly played under Waddo. One of my favourite players until he went to Spurs.
I'm with Linx on the question of his accent - he has lived darn sarf for a long time so he has lost much but not all of his accent - just as I and many exiles have.
Credit to him for forging a career after his playing days were over - but he does talk a lot of crap. No more than many pundits do though - but it hurts us Stokies more because he started out as one of our own.

I don't think Crooksy has lost any of his accent - the way he speaks is totally deliberate. He often forgets himself and lapses into normal speak. Just listen closely next time he is on.
A good example was during a recent discussion about Newcastle.
One minute he was referring to them as "Newcaaarrsul" the next it was the next it was plain old "Newcastle".
