STOKE CITY: HIGH-FLIER HAPPY TO JOIN THE CITY JET-SET Be the first reader to comment on this story
09:40 - 01 March 2008
You would think Stoke newcomer Carlo Nash would be a little travel sick after seven previous clubs before landing at the Britannia Stadium - but that's not the half of it.
The 34-year-old goalkeeper has jetted off to every corner of the globe during his summer holidays and has even produced a travel book with wife Jill.
The book has only just been published and, but for this week's attempts to sign for Stoke, he would have been swimming in a tank full of sharks to publicise its launch.
"Myself and the wife have travelled to about 50 different countries over the last six years," he revealed, "and we've had a great time of it.
"There's been swimming with sharks, scuba diving, all sorts. We see it as a way to unwind when we go away, though I know some people might not see it that way.
"We want to do four books in all, but the first is out now and called Luxury Back-Packers: Global Adventures In Style (£16). It's not about us, it's about telling people what's out there if they want more than just two weeks on the beach."
Throw in the male modelling career, for which Nash has long been better renowned, and you have more than your average goalkeeper now challenging Steve Simonsen's number one berth following his decision to join from Wigan on a three-month loan.
"Stoke being top of the table and going for promotion was obviously a big factor in wanting to come," said the Bolton-born keeper. "If they do so, then it's going to be great for the club, the fans and everyone involved in Stoke.
"I've been in promotion battles quite a few times before. In my first season with Crystal Palace we won a play-off final in 1996/97.
"So I'm no stranger to the play-offs, but hopefully with 11 games to play that's all we'll need to win promotion."
He insists he is fit to start, if required, despite no first-team games for Wigan since signing from Preston last summer.
"Yeah, I'm perfectly fit," in a reference to his fitness, not the allegedly good looks that have already been turning female heads within the Britannia Stadium.
"I played reserve games against Liverpool and Manchester United recently and came through them OK.
"Obviously I want to play, but that's at the discretion of the manager. Steve (Simonsen) is here at the moment and I think he's a fantastic keeper.
"I've always rated him after playing against him many times over the years. It's good to have competition for places and I'm sure we'll keep each other on our toes."
Nash remains non-commital over his long-term prospects at Stoke as he draws a line at the end of the season for now.
"I've still got another year left at Wigan," he said. "So much depends on the situation at the end of the season. We'll have to wait until then and see what happens

If he's starting, it couldn't exactly have been a major scare for Kirkland if they've gone with him ahead of Pollitt and Nash. This Nash deal stumbles from one farce to another

A deal was close to being agreed until Chris Kirkland suffered an injury in training.

Radio Stoke said they expect him to sign today.
According to yesterday's People,Wigan thought Kirkland had got a bad back injury, but apparently it turned out to be a spasm, and he surprisingly declared himself fit.

I don't think he's fit and guess he's failed our medical. He has been out for a while.
