Fond fond memories of Leek and some sad ones too. My cousins are both from Leek (Den Den mentioned above) and I knocked around with them every Friday for years.
I recall The White Lion fondly, for a short period of time this was the best pub in Leek. Great crowd, great music and a real decent bunch of lads. A night out in Olivers always followed a decent pub crawl around the town, which always seemed to start at the Mugge, then White Lion, Roebuck, Mucky Duck etc and then perhaps The Quiet Woman before heading up the bank to what was quite possibly the worst nightclub in the land. So bad it was good !!
My cousin Paul had a real tight set of mates, Eggy, Dillon, Pete Lovatt, Patch, Harry and loads of others.
I do recall a couple of sad times too. For a while it seemed there was a bit of a curse in Leek, at least three mates of my cousins mates committed suicide within a very short space of time. I cant remember names, but drank with these lads regularly. They were all sound. One lad was quite a talented musician and in a band that had a record deal from memory.
Any of the older Leek lads will probably recall this, it was around 1986/87 perhaps and was tragic. It might have been earlier.
And apologies if anyone on here knew these lads, my memories of them are only positive and I dont mean to open debate on this as its far too sad.
Xmas Eve always seemed a big night, we all used to get dressed up, around 30 of us, and it was seemingly planned for months.
I was a bit of a hanger on, I was only included because my two cousins were in this group but I was made really welcome. We had some real good times.
After A-Levels I worked in Leek for a year at the Council before Uni and got to know these lads even better. Friday lunch-time at the Mugge I recall being a bit of a legend session with darts and pool. Many never made it back to work, including me.
I left in 1988 and lost touch, I rarely even see my cousins now, everyone has married/moved away. That said any day of the year I can walk into the Mugge and one of them will be in.
One trip to Grimsby is fondly remembered, a hired van from The White Lion, a 1-1 draw in the Cup in Antarctic conditions and a stop in Derby on the way back followed by a big fight. Back in Leek for closing.
Happy Days.
