Hail fellow Stokies ;D
I returned to Stoke a year and a half ago after living 20 years abroad, and my God haven't things changed! Beautiful all seater stadium and Stoke sitting on top! I've been to most of the home games since I got back and am thoroughly enjoying what could be our return to top flight footy!
Now, I served my time on the terraces of the Boothen End watching the likes of Smith, Ritchie, Greenhoff, Shilton et. al. The atmosphere was addictive, and the songs we sang were a lot more hostile. Most of it seemed to be directed at the away fans rather than the game itself. ("You're goin' 'ome in a fookin' ambulance" etc)
So with my background established, I'd like to ask the following question, where the fuck did Delilah come from??? In my time it was a rather superb version of the old Tom Jones number by Alex Harvey. The first time I heard it at the Brit I nearly shat myself, it just came out of nowhere, and after 20-odd games, I still can't work out how it starts!!! Would anyone like to enlighten me so I can join in next time?

Thanks Sidders My daughter's also been with me a couple of times and wondered what they're singing, but even tho she's 19 now, I think I'll let her work it out for herself How long has it been Stoke's anthem and what's the connection (if any?)

couldnt give you an exact date but from what i can gather it started in the days when people stayed untill the end of the game, but on one occasion when we were not playin well, some got up and left before the end, to which some in the crowd sung "Forgive me delilah i just couldnt take anymore" and from then on it has been sung ever since

Buddah is correct Load of lads in a pub at an away match singing way when the landlord asked if they could stop singing the rude songs. Anton then started Delilah and the rest as they say is history

That's how slowly it should be sung.

It gets explained in this book www.amazon.co.uk/She-Stood-There-Laughing-Football/dp/0743256832 - about the origins of the song. The fuzz came into a pub when some Stokies became a lil rowdy and started putting songs on the jukebox and changing the lyrics to naughty words. When the police came in Delilah was on and they sung the 'dick in her hand' to the police. It's an anthem, showing strength when faced with trouble.
