4PM UPDATE: BRATT APOLOGY TO FANS Be the first reader to comment on this story
15:37 - 27 February 2008
Port Vale chairman Bill Bratt has apologised to supporters who missed up to half-an-hour of last night's FA Youth Cup quarter-final clash with Chelsea because of queues at the turnstiles.Vale were caught out by a crowd of 3,620, many of whom arrived shortly before the 7pm kick-off.
Some fans gave up and went home while others entered the ground at 7.30pm ... with their side already 2-0 down.
Bratt said: "First of all, I don't think the club expected that many people. Then, three turnstile men didn't turn up for duty, so we were short of bodies.
"But as club chairman I would like to apologise to supporters. It is not good enough and we will have to do better in the future.
"A lot of people turned up at 7pm and, with the best will in the world, it is difficult to get them in.
"But it is our responsibility and I can only apologise to the supporters for having to wait, and to those who didn't get in."
The crowd was Vale's highest in the competition for 41 years.
Vale were comfortably beaten 5-2, but Bratt has paid tribute to the youth side and thanked fans for their support.
He said: "The lads were a bit outclassed, but fought to the end. We are proud of them."

To be seriously fair to them, that is an incredible turn out- I can't see that many Stokies for an FA Youth Cup tie.
Surely they had an idea of numbers though? I think they got about 1500 for the Spurs match in the last round?!

I think they got about 1500 for the Spurs match in the last round?! It was a quarter final so yes I think we would have that many and more.... Rember our run to the Final in the 80's ??? I think the Vale kids did incredibly well to get this far and it really is poor for the club to let them and the fans down like this But Then again it's only the Vale so Fuck em ;D ;D

Radio Stoke were tipping a 3,000 + gate all day yesterday. Didn't they get 2,500 for the pervious round?
