The ref was Michael Oliver. If you've never heard of him it's quite understandable as he was only refereeing his second ever championship game, he is more used to matches in the non-league! Not a great choice of ref for such an important game.

The ref tonight was terrible. All refs have bad games, I accept that, but the way he handled Leon's injury was a disgrace. Not once did he come over to the player who was being treated by physio's from both clubs, to check what the injury was or how bad it was?
We had very little luck tonihg tbut LL should have scored a sitter and Ric needs to do some 1 on 1 practice. The plus side is that at least we are creating chances. It may well prove to be a kick up the jacksee that will see us move forward once again. Chin up folks.

I did not attend tonight but did listen in and also taken note from people who did attend and its perfectly clear that the Ref was not able to cope with the pressures of the occasion, this however is in no way the referees fault, it is the fault of the body/ individual whom decided that this very very very inexperienced Ref (at this standard) was the man qualified AND experienced enough to referee a top v bottom championship match.

Good point 58 -that ref should never have been appointed in the 1st place.

The ref tonight was only 23 years old which I find absolutely ridiculous! How can a lad that young control players who are much older and more experienced than himself? He's only had a season in the Conference and now this is his first season in the Football League! He obviously wasnt the only reason we lost tonight (the many missed chances were the main one) but Stoke have fell victim to this silly FA/Football League fast tracking of young officials

There is no point whatsoever in trying to blame the referee for tonight's defeat. We handed a poor team a two goal lead and then we squandered enough clear-cut chances to win TWO games. We have no one to blame but ourselves - though it was just one of those nights.
However, that does not excuse this utterly incompetent and cheating referee from getting it with both barrels. He was disgraceful from start to finish and it is hard to recall such a shocking display of officiating from one man in one game.
His refusal to send off the player who was already on a yellow card and who cynically scythed down Ricardo Fuller just before half-time was shameful cowardice at best and, it has to be said, cheating at worst. He KNEW he had top send the player off but he didn't do it. Of course, the referee showed no such leniency to ANY Stoke player who committed a similar foul in the second half!
Even worse though was leaving a clearly injured Leon Cort to writhe in agony while he allowed the game to continue. This from the same referee who earlier in the game stopped a Stoke attack so that a Preston player, who was sitting up and not looing too distressed, could receive treatment.
Even as BOTH sets of physios administered treatment and the stretcher was called for, this disgusting excuse for a referee stood 70 yards away and made no attempt to see if Cort was okay - the bloke could have been fighting for his life and this prick wouldn't have cared! Even as Cort was stretchered off he couldn't walk a few yards to see how he was.
The referee is simply beneath contempt.

Before the match there was a large amount of money piling on Preston on Betfair, so much so that they were actually clear favourites to win the game, which doesn't make sense when we have lost so few games recently, when what follows is a strange display from an unknown referee you have to wonder whether he had been got at by more than the home crowd, this game must be investigated, we have had more than enough football betting scandals in recent years for this to be written off as just being an 'incompetent' referee.
