I remember at school we talked about Earthquakes and teacher said that the plates are moving closer to the UK. Could be a regular accurance

We are indeed moving further away from the USA! That though will have little affect on us I would imagine. Down to the plate being in the middle of the Atlantic. Fault lines occur all over the place. A small movement in these can cause a tremor. It's not all the big boys fault.
edit-one such fault can be seen at Keele. You can see a line in the field on the right as You go up Keele hill, this is where the fault line runs.
